Morning Glow at Mono Lake

The sun hadn't quite crested the mountains to the east, but there was enough reflective light in the sky to create a soft glow on the tufa stone.  I had driven through the night to get here for sunrise arriving with just enough time to take a cat nap.  I also had the pleasure to meet up with the lovely and talented, Kristina Wilson to shoot here that Saturday morning and amazingly, there were only two other photographer's here.  It wasn't an epic kind of morning, but the light was nice as was the company.

Thanks for looking!

If you'd like to join me for a photography workshop at Mono Lake and other locations along the Eastern Sierra, please have a look at my website or send me an email for more info.

Santa Nella Storm

My trip home from the coast was stormy most of the way as I drove through a lot of wind and rain.  Coming in to Santa Nella to stop for gas, I could see this monster front moving down the valley and saw a couple of old barns I thought would make for a nice subject.  I took off down a few roads trying to get close enough to make a nice composition, but each of the barns were far enough out on private property it wasn't possible.  I had tried going down an old dirt road next to a canal, but that turned out to be a bad idea as the mud was the kind that built up on my tires and acted like a thick grease when I hit the brakes.  I realized sliding into the canal would probably not be the best way to end my day, so I carefully turned around and back tracked my way over to this spot in a much safer location.  It was a nice little adventure and has that bohemian in me wanting to hit the road again just to see what I can find down that next long road.

Thanks so much for taking the time to look!

Storm Over Lone Oak

The Santa Inez Valley is one of my favorite places to visit along the Central Coast in California, even in this stormy weather.  As I drove along I kept looking for sun ray and rainbow opportunities, but that didn't pan out for me.  When I began the drive up Armour Ranch Road, I saw the sheets of rain off along the mountains to the east and this single oak looking as if it was reaching for every bit of moisture to come its way.  I couldn't tell if the tree was dead or alive from my vantage point (no, I wasn't going to crawl through barbed wire fences), but everything else was a lush green when I passed through.  Without some nice light to bring out the colors, I opted for a more dramatic look here in black and white.

Thanks as always for taking the time for a look!

Great drama in those clouds.   So many great Oaks out here but many are  on fenced, private property and hard to compose in a scene.   A long lens helps ;-)
Very nicely shot and presented here :-)

There didn't seem any reason to be in a rush as it was such a beautiful day.  Getting here to capture the very last of an incredible Bay Area sunset was almost a comedy of errors.  Sometimes both my timing and planning can get the better of me, but I think this was a nice consolation.  Mid-February and California has been seeing some of the most unseasonable weather especially along the North Coast.  Just the night before on the beach in Marin, I had actually been wearing a t-shirt until the sun went down.  This drought is killing us, but it is oh so hard not to enjoy these pleasantly mild days.

Thanks so much for taking the time to look!

Highway One

The famous Bixby Bridge in Big Sur plays host to this stretch of Hwy. 1 on the Central Coast of California.  If you've never been, it's worth your while to take a nice, long, leisurely drive from San Francisco down to Santa Barbara.  You'll see some of the prettiest and dramatic coastline with small, rural towns along the way.  Go in the winter and spring months when everything is green, wildflowers are blooming and you are less likely to encounter fog.

Thanks so much for taking the time to look!

Spring Storm at Bridgeport

We had a great day exploring around Bridgeport, as well as traveling some back roads into Nevada.  The weather had been great all day, but then the storm clouds began to build in the afternoon.  We really weren't sure if we'd get any nice light for sunset until we came back into the Bridgeport Valley and saw a nice opening over the Sierra.  I had seen these rocks on the lake earlier and thought a shot here would work best for this evening.  Glad we did some scouting and had a place we could get to at the right time.

Thanks as always for taking the time for a look!

Yep, we lucked out with that little hole in the clouds.   The mix of cool and warm tones is very nice.    Great texture in the clouds.

One of my favorite things to do is wander around with my camera and only one lens to see what I can discover.  With only one focal length, it limits your vision and hopefully, challenges your creativity.  While in the Alabama Hills I explored an area I hadn't been to before to see if I could find something new.  Though much was the same as you'd find anywhere else in this jumble of rocks, I did find something of a mini slot canyon I'm sure I'll revisit on another trip.  I also came across these six small hedgehog cacti hidden on a sloping crevice between some boulders.  I love these intimate detail shots and especially finding such tenacious life thriving on a miniscule amount of nutrients.  With my wide angle lens and these guys only about the size of my fist, I had to get in close bracing my elbows against the rough rock because I also didn't have my tripod with me either.  I know it's not the kind of shot most people like, but it was a nice find for me and one of the reasons I really love the desert.

Thanks for looking!

High Mountain Heat

At 10,000' and more, the Bristlecones are best visited in the summer.  Well, you can get up here in the winter, but only with a snowmobile and a lot of extra effort when the snow is deep.  I love the summer months up here because it is so warm and there is more opportunity for monsoon storms to add a bit more interest to an already interesting environment.  On this evening I had heat and a smoldering sunset sky casting its color over the landscape.  I know this iconic tree has been shot to death, but when you're a landscape photographer with a scene like this before you, you just have to get the shot!

Thanks for looking!

While driving home from the Central Coast I had nothing but storming, rainy skies and didn't get the best light.  The mustard plants were flowering like crazy on the lush, grassy green hills and made up for the lackluster light.  Spring has sprung in California, though a bit early.  It seems the wildflowers are taking advantage of any moisture as quick as they can.

Thanks for looking!

Beneath the Goleta Pier

It had been pouring rain all day, but I still wanted to get out just in case the clouds parted for sunset.  They didn't.  The rain had stopped for the most part while at the pier, and really the only thing getting wet were my feet.  You don't often get to see big storms in the Santa Barbara area and this one just kept rolling in so I wanted to take advantage of whatever it had to offer.  A little long exposure with a black and white process seemed to suit this composition best.

Thanks for looking!
