Where do heritage advocate's broken hearts go? No, not Baguio and Sagada...it's Bontoc!

The American colonial era-built Provincial Capitol of Mountain Province, once the seat of administration of what is now the entire Cordillera Administrative Region, was mostly demolished to give way for a new capitol.

Baguio City, "The Summer Capital of the Philippines" has witnessed a dramatic rise after the tragic 1990 earthquake that killed a lot of its citizens and destroyed infrastructure. Today, Baguio is striving to maintain the precarious balance between natural and cultural heritage and development. In the realm of built heritage sites, the former American colonial hill station has lost a lot of its sites either from the quake or runaway development. Baguio's surviving heritage are on some of these photos.

Some of Baguio's surviving built heritage sites are here, some of them are familiar, others taken for granted.

Where can you find one of the most expensive seaweeds in the Philippines? One area sits under the tourists' nose--Kapurpurawan Rock in Ilocos Norte. Harvesters risk life and limb in picking gamet, a seaweed that is a close relative of Japanese nori seaweed sushi wrapper.

The annual floral and cultural revelry of Panagbenga Festival in Baguio has marked its 20th anniversary recently. Panagbenga came from an Igorot/Cordilleran word meaning "blooming flowers." The celebration's highlights include a grand street dance parade and a float parade made from different flowers, depicting the creativity and cultural diversity in the Philippines' Summer Capital.

The vast land of tobacco and corn, where Cordilleras clash with the seas, where massive churches rule the ili or town, the wind powers the communities, and where food is sumptouous. The northern part of Ilocandia is a sight to behold for adventurers.
