Stacked Pebbles Used by Jill Stein for St Edmunds House

As interior designer Jill Stein says herself: “When designing rooms at St Edmunds House, I think of somewhere I’d like to stay beside the sea”...so when it came to selecting a wall covering as part of the refurbishment of the bathrooms at the six-bedroom property, pebbles were the natural choice.

Not just any pebble of course. Jill selected the Stacked Pebble range from Island Stone (in Medan Charcoal) – a design which turns convention on its side. Instead of using the flat face of the stone, this range, available in 300mm x 150mm interlocking squares, stacks pebbles using the side profile to give an unusual and contemporary feel.

St Edmunds House is set in private gardens overlooking the Camel Estuary – and it was from the sea that Jill originally drew her inspiration for the design of each of the rooms.

Says Jill: “St Edmunds House was originally spilt into two houses, so it wasn’t until they both came up for sale in September 2000 that we were able to buy and refurbish the whole building, creating our most luxurious accommodation. The rooms at St Edmunds House are inspired by the coast – the design incorporates a relaxed but luxurious feel, with solid oak flooring, double French doors with American shutters and driftwood signs displaying the room names...all of which have been named after a local surfing beach.

“When we started on the recent refurbishment of the bathrooms, I wanted to continue the connection with the sea and the stacked pebble range from Island Stone was a natural fit. I had previously used the product at Bryn Cottage, a one bedroom cottage in the heart of Padstow with a great view down the estuary, and knew that the natural style and textures would work well.”

The Island Stone Stacked Pebble range comes in three colours. To find out more, go to http://www.islandstone.co.uk/pages/index.asp?title=Stacked_Pebble

At Island Stone, we ethically harvest the best stone that nature has to offer and then apply our design and manufacturing skills.

We control the entire production process from start to finish, sourcing, hand-sorting and colour-matching raw materials, before shaping them through tumbling, or precision-cutting to form a myriad of product options and design styles. We invented the original mesh-backed pebble tile in 1998 and took this as our inspiration to develop the most exciting stone tile and cladding designs on the planet - ensuring that wherever people live and work, they’re only a hand-touch away from the natural world.

We’re also committed to a greener way of working, fully off-setting our door-to-door carbon emissions and utilising slab off-cuts creatively as part of our product portfolio. We understand the finite resources of our planet…and act accordingly.
