SOCIAL MEDIA DON’TS FOR SMALL BUSINESSES

For small businesses, running a social media presence with constant updating and interaction is an impossibility. Worst of all, when you finally find some time to get online, you can never seem to move forward, only sideways or, worse yet, backwards.

Here’s a quick tip to get your social media profile back on top!

Don’t Treat It as a Marketing Function Alone!

Often businesses are guilty of ‘silo thinking’, and social media is no exception. For businesses that still treat it as a promotional tool, it’s often left in control of the marketing function.

Many businesses are changing their approach to social media now, decentralizing their approach and diversifying to consider their profile a sales channel, promotional channel, customer service channel and a market research channel.

To get the best results from social media – and to meet customer expectations – move it away from marketing and more towards becoming an integral part of your customer relationships.

Here’s a quick tip to get your social media profile back on top!

Don’t Create Too Many Accounts!

There seem to be a million and one options when it comes to social media! Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat… The list goes on!

So take time and take stock of what social media accounts will best serve your needs. Facebook is a great option, as you can upload photos, business-specific news and other bits and pieces to be viewed in passing, like headlines and other such things.

YouTube is great if you know you will be posting lots of videos relevant to your work. You can share the videos from there to other social media sites and you can view further information about your viewers, like age, sex and location.

Snapchat is a more modern option, catering strictly to smartphone users. You have choices of how you want to share images and video, usually viewable for 24 hours before it disappears. Snapchat is proving to be a great marketing tool with the younger generations, with nearly everyone with a smartphone active on Snapchat to some degree.

HOW TO BUILD A SOLID INSTAGRAM FOLLOWING

Knowing the ins and outs of Social Media websites like Instagram can prove to be the difference in establishing your brand in the market.

If you don’t know too much about Instagram, never fear! Here is a great tip to capitalize on its potential!

Post Regularly and During Optimal Times. It’s always quality over quantity. Experiment with posting times and see what gives you the best responses.

The average brand posts 1.5x a day – try to match that, with Monday and Thursday often driving the most engagement – what works for you? Remember – ‘off-hours’ aren’t always off limits!

WHY SOME BRANDS ARE LOVED UNCONDITIALLY – WHAT CAN YOU DO?

Imagine that you’re just about to take a much-needed dream vacation. You’re at the airport, bags ready to go, when…

Disaster! The flight is delayed indefinitely due to a mechanical issue – their fault – and you have no idea WHEN you’ll be able to get to your holiday hotspot.

How would you react in that scenario?

If the company you are using is worth its salt, it should preempt this situation and offer all affected passengers some form of compensation, be it accommodation or plane tickets for a flight at a later date.

Here’s an actual story from Virgin America, an airline company from America.

When his flight was delayed, everyone on Dom Heyberg’s flight was immediately credited $50 credit, which led to Heyberg paying credit to the company on Twitter, thanking them for their swift response to the issue. Virgin later responded, thanking Heyberg for his understanding

It’s these kind of stories that end up going viral and giving your company a positive profile – can your business capitalize on this kind of trend in any way?
