The Las Vegas and Phoenix housing markets were two of the worst hit by the recession, but are now #2 and #3 on the S&P/Case-Shiller Home Price Index. It's an exciting time to be in this business!

During the "Great Recession" of 2008-2011 we lost more than 1.5 million construction jobs in the U.S. Since we started to recover last year, we've only been able to add about 150,000 of those jobs back. Where are the 1.35 million construction workers? That seems to be a hard question to answer for home builders, apartment developers and the countless number of specialty-trade contractors who are struggling to build our way out of this recession.
One argument is that these folks have simply moved on to other careers and they're not interested in coming back to work their once-chosen trade. Another argument is that they're under-employed working part-time and adjusting to a new lifestyle that might include some welfare benefits....and these folks are also uninterested in returning to the trades. And yet another argument is that illegal immigration was far more prevalent than once thought and that these folks simply moved back to their country of origin. What makes this final argument a little more interesting is that these folks probably do have an interest in returning to work their trade but there is virtually no legal path for them to do so. Quite a conundrum, huh.
Whichever of those arguments turn out to be more true than the others, one thing is for sure, it will be a wild ride out of this recession! At Loftco, we hold our trade and our tradesmen in very high regard. We like to think that we're on the leading edge of our trade by our continued search to do what we do Better, Faster & Cheaper....in that order! Our wall panels and trusses allow our tradesmen to produce more than the typical old school framer which is a win for our tradesmen because they're able to earn more money in far less time. It's a huge win for our home building and apartment developing clients too because by using wall panels it takes far less tradesmen to build their projects in a market where labor is so scarce.
