Not All Thinking Is Thoughtful and Not All Reasons Are Reasonable
Ever wonder why it's easier to make emotional decisions, based on fear or anger (which is just fear trying to be scary), than it is to make rational and logical decisions? Or why it is that, when we look back at our fear-based decisions, we remember them as having been logically thought out?
I believe the first of these unfortunate facts is based on two accidents of evolutionary biology.
1) Our logical thinking, or reflection, was one of the most recent skills developed during our evolution. As a result, it is relatively slow and takes a lot of energy.
2) Our much faster thinking is based on recognising patterns (reaction), and the part of our brain that does that shares space with the part of our brain that processes emotion. This means our reactions fast but they are also very emotional.
I believe that the second of these unfortunate facts is directly linked to the overconfidence that helped our ancestors leave the trees to wander around the world. Once we have made a fast, emotional reaction, we somehow always convince ourselves that our reaction was deliberate and carefully thought out.
If you'd like to read my whole explanation, you can find it in my book. If you'd rather read a simple allegorical story, you'll find it in a new post on my blog.
Please consider reading it, and please let me know what you think.

Hi Friends,
My book is out!
Springer has just published "Anthropology-Based Computing: Putting the Human in Human-Computer Interaction".
It's my attempt to explain how humans use tools - from the earliest stone hammers to the apps that make you a dangerously distracted driver. The book is written for an open audience, not just for engineers or computer scientists, and it includes dozens of stories, and 84 illustrations - including at least one original cartoon per chapter, just because science is fun!
The last section of the book is a series of simple changes you can make to your own technology in order to stop your phone from distracting you, your computer from hurting you, and your on-board navigator from causing you to crash your car.
Please check it out.
By the way, if you're anti-evolution, you should probably gather a mob and buy up all of the digital copies so that there won't be any left to pollute the minds of your less-insightful neighbours. That would really teach me a lesson!
Looking forward,

Want to learn how to make your phone ring so that you can hear it and the people around you can't? Check out my latest paper! Written with Jorge Oliveira and Saskia Bakker, this paper describes the first results from the project I ran in Portugal last year. Please check it out and let me know what you think!

I've just published a new position paper on affective (and effective!) haptics. Are you interested in user experiences that really engage people? The secret may be in designing to suit the way the pre-attentive brain works. Please let me know what you think: https://lnkd.in/b2DPDpg

I'm in Toronto this week for CHI2014, and I hope those of you also attending will drop me a line so we can meet up.
Why, you may ask, am I attending a conference less than a month after finishing a very intensive doctorate programme? Well my friends, if you don't mind a little use of one swear word, the answer is attached here, for your edification and entertainment:
