British Gas to create warmer, energy efficient homes in Southampton in £27 million scheme

• Around 1,500 homes across Southampton will be improved through energy-saving measures
• New windows, heating controls and external wall insulation mean warmer homes for tenants
• It will be the biggest energy efficiency improvement scheme in Britain

Homes across Southampton are set to become warmer and more energy efficient, under a £27 million partnership between Southampton City Council and British Gas.

From next month, work will begin to transform around 1,500 homes across the city. It will be the biggest energy efficiency improvement project of its kind to be undertaken in Britain, carried out under the Energy Companies Obligation (ECO).
Tenants living in five tower blocks and nine smaller estate blocks will benefit from a range of energy-saving improvements which include new windows, new heating controls and new roofs.

British Gas will fit external wall insulation to the outside of some of the buildings to reduce the amount of heat escaping through walls, keeping people’s homes warmer for longer. It will give some of the properties a modern appearance.

David Young, Managing Director of British Gas Energy Efficiency, said: “We’re proud to deliver Britain’s biggest energy efficiency improvement scheme in partnership with Southampton Council to create thousands of warmer, more energy efficient homes.”
Cllr Warwick Payne, Cabinet Member for Housing and Sustainability, commented: "This energy efficiency project will provide affordable warmth to tenants, improve the appearance of properties and boost the local economy with job opportunities created by this exciting scheme.

"This will be a massive project, some three times larger than the recent works in Weston. We look forward to working with British Gas, our tenants and the wider communities in the months ahead to make energy-saving improvements to these estates." http://ow.ly/SwbeZ

Regenerating #SolihullCommunityHousing
The project, carried out by British Gas as part of the Energy Companies Obligation, has supported wider regeneration in the north of the borough. Insulation has given the buildings a modern appearance and communal areas have been repainted to reinforce the fresh look.
Caroline Spelman MP said: “I was delighted to visit the completed British Gas refurbishment project in Chelmsley Wood, which is one of the largest projects in the country for energy conservation. It’s helped many of my constituents cut their energy bills, and I’d like to see it replicated more widely.” http://ow.ly/QdMau
