Basic Information
Your basic neighborhood bar: low-key and laid-back. Has played an indispensable role as a gathering place for the Shimer College community. However, this may not be the friendliest place if you are just coming by as a stranger, especially in the absence of friends who are regulars. In addition, as the space is quite small, it can get very loud and crowded on some nights..

Great dog people --as you might expect in such a dog-intensive neighborhood -- and very professional. They have done very well by our shih-tzu, who is quite particular about how he prefers to be groomed. Definitely recommended.

Without doubt, this is the place to go for Korean groceries in the Chicago area. (There is a reasonable amount of Japanese and some other Asian foodstuffs as well.) Excellent selection and quite fair prices. Whether you're after sweet-potato noodles, the extensive kimchi bar, or a dolsot pan, if they don't have it here, you probably won't find it anywhere else in the city.

Tasty Mexican food with reasonable selection and fast service, located very conveniently on the walkway to the South Shore and Metra Electric trains. Not world-beating cuisine, perhaps, but a good option when you're rushing for the train. If you're not rushing, the space is not large, but it is sufficient to sit and get some work done as you enjoy your shrimp quesadilla.

Formerly called Ennui, this cafe is now known as the Growling Rabbit. The selection of baked goods and coffee-type beverages is good, the ambience is pleasant and relaxed, and the events are great. I have attended several symposia here, organized by Erik Graff; they are invariably excellent. For a its combination of cookies, coffee, and conversation, I don't think the Growling Rabbit can be beat by any establishment in Rogers Park (or for some distance beyond).

Like many things in downtown Chicago, this garage is difficult to navigate unless you're already familiar with it. However, it's hard to beat the location, and the price is reasonable by downtown Chicago standards. If traveling with a dog, however, this is not for you: the exits open onto a no-dogs area of the park.

Great space for live music, well-designed and well-managed. Captures and channels the energy of the bands. If you're not one for standing in the "pit", the wraparound second floor offers good seating options as well.
