…a day in Paris

Blind Post Bind dummy with removable cover secured by recessed magnets to the post bound channel of the image block. Cover image is inkjet printed canvas, the remainder Arrestox bookcloth on Davy Board. 17 1/2" x 8 1/2" or near the size limit for my six foot pocket bindery ; ]

The project was an exploration of the Sequence imaging process developed by Nathan Lyons. In the Sequence Structure all images are "Dependent" units that preview or reference other images and/or echo common elements. A book so realized shows one thing while suggesting another. It's an outdoor parlour game, but with those principles in mind, I worked in downtown Paris KY [pun intended] for two and a half hours one November morning to gain an understanding of the process in making sequence specific images. As a first effort, I was reasonably satisfied with the project and will refine the images in other exotic locations ; ]

Bibliography:

Notations in Passing - Nathan Lyons
Riding First Class on the Titanic - Nathan Lyons
Structure for the Visual Book - Keith Smith
Nathan Lyons, Selected Essays, Lectures, and Interviews - Jessica S. McDonald

After putting together the 18 image black&white OutofChicago book, I went back through the images I had made during the three days in Chicago. My x100t was set for Classic Chrome jpeg’s, but I had never seen them in color as my custom Lightroom Preset converts them to monochrome on Import. There were 28 candidates which I Color Graded, cropped to 2.33:1 cine format, then made them into this book.

Drop Spine - Drum Leaf binding on boards, cover inkjet printed on Arrestox. Printed 2 Up on A3 Epson Ultra Premium Luster. Prints approx. 6” x 14.25”. Font: Marker Felt.

Drop Spine - Drum Leaf binding on boards, cover inkjet printed on Arrestox. Letter size prints on Epson Ultra Premium Luster. Month seven of the series and about the tenth time I have made this binding. Perhaps I will have learned the technique by project's end…always some little gremlin sneaks in ; ]

After attending the OutofChicago Photo Conference I made this drop spine drum leaf binding on boards. The Arrestox bookcloth was sprayed with Krylon UV Archival [thoroughly dried] then the cover text was printed on an Epson 3800 [thoroughly dried] then a light coat of Krylon was applied as a fixative and thoroughly dried before mounting with PVA on Davy Board. The content was 28 street images made during the workshops printed on letter size Luster, scored and folded on the long edge as a full page spread.
