"But the ascent of man is not made by lovable people. It's made by people who have two qualities: an immense integrity and at least a little genius." -- Jacob Bronowski (Ascent of Man, "The Hidden Structures," 1972)

"By three methods we may learn wisdom:
first, by reflection, which is noblest;

Andy Lau's A World Without Thieves is a film that stays with you because it is so heartfelt. A rural boy, after years of city work, is returning to his village with his earnings. To avoid substantial wire fees, he decides to bring his cash on the train, which is filled with thieves. Who will get the money? 4/5 stars.

2012's The Cabin in the Woods is a horror movie that isn't afraid to make fun of itself. All the usual horror movie tropes are there--this movie just fleshes them out a little more. Suspend your disbelief and enjoy the show, which includes both comedy and horror. From the writer of Firefly and Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog. 4.5 out of 5 stars.

The Chinese movie, Aftershock (Tangshan Dadizhen), follows a family after the 1976 Tangshan earthquake. Taking us from 1976 to the year 2010, we follow not just the family, but China's progression through three decades. An epic, exquisitely done film. 5/5 stars.

2008's "Definitely, Maybe" is a wonderful romantic comedy.  A divorced father tells his young daughter about the loves of his life but changes the women's names.  As he tells the story, his daughter will guess which one is her mother.  5/5 stars.
