If you know someone fighting colon cancer, point them to this blog.
Whoa- it has almost been a year already?! It is so baffling to me to think about a year ago I had just found out that I most likely had cancer, my husband was in Afghanistan, I was trying to plan a wedding, and prep for an up...

Interesting idea....especially from a German company.

BMW hire workers with average age of 47 years
#manufacturing
The 47-year-old production line was created to mirror the older workforce the company expects to employ in 2017. Many countries are heading for what is commonly known as the Demographic Timebomb. This means an increasing proportion of their populations falling into older age-brackets. Numbers from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics show that the proportion of 65-69 year-olds in work in the country has risen from a low of 17.8% in the first quarter of 1985, to 27.6% by mid-2005 and to 32.1% in 2011.

It is good to see larger companies adapting to meet the needs of their workforce. An inspired worker is always going to be more productive in my opinion.

I'm not a huge Phish fan, but this is a pretty cool cover by some local friends. It passed the "kitchen" test...I was singing it hours after I listened to it.

New toy shelf built for Jack. Cherry sides from Horizon, shelves out of barn wood, poplar, scrap laying around the shop.

Cool idea

I grew tired of always walking across the garage, (or the house) for the tool I forgot. I thought a mobile work bench might be the ticket to productivity and so far I am very satisfied. I can load the cart with what I may need for a task, like putting up a ceiling fan or doing plumbing, and just roll to my destination.  Most of the time I use my mobile work bench either beside the table saw or near the drill press when working on small pieces. Handy as can be. Build one!

Great idea +Kalen Fitch . I guess you used plumbing pipe for the main framework.

I wish more people realized the value of mentorship to the one doing the mentoring!

It is an everyday struggle for me to make sure I am not micromanaging, especially with a team that has the caliber of mine. I could do a lot better, but I would hope they thought I allowed them a good bit of autonomy.

The reason manufacturing jobs aren't coming back to the US is detailed pretty well here:

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/22/business/apple-america-and-a-squeezed-middle-class.html?_r=3&hp=&pagewanted=all

excerpt

[Apple executives say that going overseas, at this point, is their only option. One former executive described how the company relied upon a Chinese factory to revamp iPhone manufacturing just weeks before the device was due on shelves. Apple had redesigned the iPhone’s screen at the last minute, forcing an assembly line overhaul. New screens began arriving at the plant near midnight.

A foreman immediately roused 8,000 workers inside the company’s dormitories, according to the executive. Each employee was given a biscuit and a cup of tea, guided to a workstation and within half an hour started a 12-hour shift fitting glass screens into beveled frames. Within 96 hours, the plant was producing over 10,000 iPhones a day.

“The speed and flexibility is breathtaking,” the executive said. “There’s no American plant that can match that.”]
Building Apple’s iPhone in the United States would demand much more than hiring Americans — it would require transforming the national and global economies.
