Tanner Smith is the latest recipient of the Boulet President’s Scholarship. The scholarship was initiated in 2003 by Larry and Elizabeth "Buffy" Boulet. Larry, a retired partner from PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, has chaired the ISU Foundation Board of Directors and continues to serve as a director. As chairman, he led the restructuring of the foundation's governance and the initiation of the March On! Capital Campaign. He and his wife, Buffy, co-chaired the campaign's national committee.

For Tanner, a supply chain management major, the Presidential Scholarship is much more than a way to finance his education. "Being a President's Scholar has opened more doors than I can count, including many I may not even be aware of," he said. "Financially, it has allowed me to focus completely on my college experience, instead of on how I was going to pay next semester's tuition.”

College Wins Provost Award

This is the inaugural year for the Provost's Award for Excellence in Student Learning Assessment and Improvement, which is designed to recognize programs for exemplary assessment but also to help embed assessment in Indiana State University's culture.

It was won by the Scott College of Business for its BS in Accounting. Susan Moncada accepted the award and congratulations to all the Accounting faculty for their hard work toward this effort, and particularly to Susan who is a leader and mentor in so many ways.

Art in Federal Hall

This is “Coal Pickers” (1939) by David Burke. It is a color woodcut on Japanese paper and is one of the Works Progress artworks. Very little is known about Burke but he was one of the artists supported by the Works Progress Administration.

The Great Depression (1929-1939) was a bleak time for many Americans and many of the artists for the Works Progress Administration Federal Arts Project chose to reflect that in works that represented toil and hardship. Others chose to celebrate “the worker” and the works from the period in Federal Hall represent both views.

The Indiana State University's Permanent Art Collection contains approximately 4,000 works of art; many from the period of the Works Progress Administration (1935 - 1941) and so are roughly contemporary with when Federal Hall was constructed in 1934. The art housed in Federal Hall have been carefully chosen to be contemporary with, or sympathetic to, the building and the Scott College of Business.

A little piece of trivia about the "Under the Buttonwood" sculpture outside our building,

The stone used for the sculpture comes from the same quarry that provided the stone used for the building in the 1930's.

The sculpture is symbolically tied to the College and Indiana State as a whole in other ways too http://www.indstate.edu/business/artworks/buttonwood

A generous anonymous gift to the Indiana State University Foundation made the sculpture, "Under the Buttonwood" by Tell City artist Greg Harris possible. There is plenty of symbolism behind the sculpture for both Indiana State and the Scott College of Business in particular. "Under the Buttonwood" is a stone carving of a buttonwood leaf, commemorating a 1792 meeting beneath a buttonwood tree on Wall Street in New York City where 24 stockbrokers s...

The Networks Professional Development Program Freshmen Scholars International Dining Experience last Thursday was another success. Attendees were treated to food from Thailand, Saudi Arabia, Scotland and Spain.

The appetizer was baba ghanoush from Saudi Arabia, followed by red curry chicken from Thailand and paella from Spain finished off with Scottish shortbread.

Given we are now in finals week, the globe stress balls were a good idea as well.

University Speaker Series: Mrs. Fields. Dec. 9

There may be no story of stardom more delicious than that of Debbi Fields - founder, baker, chief cookie lover and former chairman of Mrs. Fields Cookies.

Fields' entrepreneurial, operational and managerial experience came from building a company from scratch, starting in 1977. Fields has since sold the $450 million company, which is a market leader among fresh-baked cookie stores.

Fields will share her pursuit of the American dream as part of the Indiana State University's University Speaker Series at 7 p.m. on December 9, in Tilson Auditorium, Tirey Hall.

The event is free and open to the public.
