Nikki S Lee: Projects

Lee is an artist who works with photography, performance and multimedia. She often questions identity within her works and in this project the main focus was her own identity and the relationship she has with other people. She immersed herself in different cultures/communities by transforming herself into a variety of people and learning new skills (e.g. skateboarding and dancing). Some of the photographs are taken by friends and all are taken using a basic point and shoot camera to create the particular aesthetic.

Task 2:

I decided to create a new narrative by using different albums of family holidays and curating them into one, focusing on my brother. As there is an 8 years difference between my sister and I, and my brother, he often didn't come on family holidays. I used images of a few holidays from 2002 to create a fictitious holiday that shows him in every photograph.

Dialogue with a stranger. I found this task intimidating but a challenge I was definitely up for doing. I decided to go to a place where I feel most comfortable and happy in Coventry to try and boost my confidence of walking up to someone! I sat for a while thinking about who to ask, what to say etc. The model here was sunbathing and looked relaxed and seemed unphased by me asking if she would take part in this task. I learnt, in a short space of time, that she was a 2nd year Graphic Design student revising for an exam at the end of the month. I over heard her speaking to her boyfriend (assuming it is her boyfriend as she kissed him on the cheek) after the shoot that she was from Germany.

For this task, I chose to capture 50% of my identity.

(Sorry about the reflection on the image, forgot to scan it in!)

Task 2:
For this task I chose to focus on my relationship with my boyfriend, Charlie. I wanted to portray the space we give each other in our relationship as well as how our own, very different lives influences this space. I did this by taking close-ups of him with his back to me/facing away from me.

Task 1: After a discussion with my partner, Kacie, I decided to concentrate on the fact that she didn't like her smile. I decided to blurr her smile to emphasise the meaning behind the image, and in turn, draw in the viewers attention to her smile.
