Unlike the mototaxis seen throughout Peru, those used in the race don’t have an enclosed cab. Instead, a “copilot” sits behind the driver on an open metal frame. Omar, a copilot, leans into the turns in an attempt to minimize steering with the front wheel, thus conserving speed.

Peru’s government has confirmed the deaths of 62 people as well as 62,000 whose homes were either damaged or destroyed in 24 of Peru’s 25 states as heavy rains continue to devastate Peru. Lima mayor Luis Castañeda is the latest to join calls to cancel the 2019 Games in order to rebuild the areas hardest hit by floods and landslides.

Labor unions and some politicians opposed transferring Petroperu to Fonafe, which falls under Peru’s finance ministry. They call it “privatization in disguise,” or the first step in privatizing the company. Peru’s largest labor union, CGTP, told La Republica the decree will convert Petroperu into a holding company of autonomous business units beholden to private companies they work in partnerships with.

According to Castro, Odebrecht executives cooperating with Peruvian investigators since reaching a deal with the United States Justice Department revealed that they had paid $20 million in bribes to Toledo via Maiman’s bank account in London. In exchange for the bribe, Toledo’s government allegedly helped Odebrecht win $600 million in contracts to build two sections of the Interoceanic Highway which connects Peru to Brazil. The contracts were later increased to over $1.3 billion.

Protests have halted visitor traffic to Machu Picchu twice in the last two years. In October 2015, local leaders demanded the repeal of a law which would allow private companies to provide services at archaeological sites. In November 2016, residents of the Machupicchu district blocked the rail line to Machu Picchu to demand the train stop selling souvenirs and lunches to passengers, among other demands.

Spend any length of time in Miraflores and you’ll inevitably notice paragliders swooping up and down the Costa Verde, and even buzzing past Larcomar’s restaurants at lunchtime. Taking to the air gives a quick thrill and the best view in all of Lima.

“The laws were created for big industrial beer, and it works if you have massive volume. It was probably created by the big industrial beer lobbyists to keep other industrial beers from being able to take foot. You can’t come into Peru without massive volume unless you’re going to operate at a loss for five years.” -- Ted Alexander, founder of Sierra Andina Brewing Company
