Born today in 1907, Varian Fry was an American journalist who ran a rescue mission in Vichy France during World War II. Fry was able to rescue about 2,500 Jews and Nazi opponents, including great figures such as Marc Chagall, Hannah Arendt, and Max Ernst. In 1997, we featured the exhibition, "Assignment: Rescue, The Story of Varian Fry and the Emergency Rescue Committee," which included a dramatic installation that described Fry's mission. Happy birthday to American artist Sol LeWitt, born today in 1928! LeWitt is credited with pioneering the Conceptual art movement, which arose in opposition to the Abstract Expressionist movement of the 1950s. LeWitt also changed the way art was produced and viewed. Instead of painting on a canvas which would then be placed on a wall, he drew directly onto the walls of museums and other art spaces. See one of his innovative wall drawings here: http://ow.ly/oIdXn
