My boss takes her staff here to lunch every Christmas. The quality of food is really good, and I can see why they're known for their french fries. And for those who are on some sort of non-french fry-eating diet, the substitution is plain rice. So get the french fries. Anyway, I usually order one of the fish options, and you get to choose what kind of sauce you want on the side. I usually get olive oil. And they have a good wine selection as well. I can see why my boss likes this place.. It's definitely for the over 50 crowd. But as a youth, I do appreciate good food and this place has it. Just expect a quiet atmosphere, at least for lunch.

This restaurant never fails to appeal. Excellent food/service command prices they charge. Terrific changing menu doesn't disappoint. Save room for desserts! Asked if you are attending opera/ballet/symphony the way to go, so they know how to pace the service.

We arrived @ 6:00 on a Wednesday (before the opera). The albacore was out, the salmon was out, the petrale sole was terrible. Service was as agreeable as usual (and we weren't charged for the sole). Caesar salad and french fries as good as ever. But WHAT has happened to HSG?

This was just awful. I came expecting some decent mid-to-upper-scale seafood during my trip to San Francisco and was instead greeted by the most bland, awful, unappetizing meal of my whole trip (and that includes airport and fast food). Overpriced, terrible entree did a lot towards ruining our whole evening. Avoid like the plague.

Standard food at high prices. I wasn't served a bad meal here, but having become used to the more exciting dinner options throughout Hayes Valley, this place felt quite out of place. They will probably need to consider a bit of a makeover (in terms of menu and decor) if they want to win over newer generations of diners. The service was fine.

Popular pre-ballet or opera dining that is just the right portions and also a nice wine selection.

the spicy peanut sauce on french fries is worth the price of admission! the way hayes st. grill cooks calimari ought to be the way the world does! calimari here is tender, delicate with a simple butter adn caper sauce. don't miss the black bean and chevre salad too. you won't be disappointed. this place is like the rolling stones; it just keeps producing great designs, year in and year out. js

Classic establishment. Hayes Street is so cleaned up now, no longer need to head to sketchy area just to have great food.
