I tend not to focus on the day-to-day negative aspects of Japanese culture, because I feel that it's easy information to find if you want/need to, and because the day-to-day negative aspects of Canadian and North American culture feel (to me) roughly equivalent, though there are clearly differences and my own perspective and experiences are clearly skewed.
But I've also followed Vivian's blog here for a number of years, and I think that her take is generally the same as my own, right down to opening her blog post with "I rarely tackle negative aspects of Japan," which is the exact phrase that prompted me to reblog this in the first place. If you're considering a trip to Japan, I think this is a smart post on safety and culture, and it's worth reading.
I'm always up for a larger discussion of these issues, but I don't generally find the internet a very good place to discuss the intricacies of race, sex, or culture. Feel free to hit me up about it if you like.
