My lovely hometown!
Congratulations to Plovdiv, Bulgaria for having been awarded the title of European Capital of Culture 2019!

The announcement was made yesterday following the decision by a selection panel of 13 independent cultural experts.

The entry criteria state that cities should prepare a cultural programme with a strong European dimension, which fosters the participation of citizens in the city, its neighbourhood and the whole country.

For more information on the selection see: http://europa.eu/!DT47DY

or check out more on the European Capitals of Culture initiative here: http://europa.eu/!QV66QY

“We had so many great shows submitted this year. We had comedies that made you laugh, and comedies that made you cry… because they were dramas submitted as comedies.”

Bulgaria's government finally resigned today, here is a great photo from "Kapital" demonstrating the creativity of the anti-government protesters, who finally received what they asked for one year ago - ОСТАВКА! (resignation)

Congrats to the Deutsche Mannschaft for a well-deserved victory! (It was quite a memorable goal in the 113 minute that brought Germany the trophy, and one that will remain in soccer's history.)
Congratulations Germany! Champion - FIFA World Cup 2014

Costa Rica and the Netherlands might be too close to call on the pitch, but who earns the most points in the Competitiveness World Cup? http://wef.ch/1ro6MPp

EU celebrates 100th anniversary of WWI.
Today - 28 June 2014 - marks 100 years since the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne in Sarajevo, an event that served as a trigger for what later became the First World War.

Leaders from all EU countries commemorated the centenary of the War last week.

"We have our differences, but they are fought around the table, not on the battlefield," said President Barroso

Let's keep it this way! #WW1 #WWI #WorldWarOne

It's true that the EU, especially in recent years, has been expanding in leaps and bounces, but this week has just been incredible - first Albania gets a candidate member state status, today has been yet another historic moment for the Eastern Partnership...What's next? My proposition is extending an offer to Russia to join the EU! Russia in the EU, that should be the goal for 2050 :), provided that the EU continues to exist (at least in some form)...
On this historic morning, the EU signed the Association Agreements with #Ukraine, #Georgia and the Republic of #Moldova.
The Association Agreements are recognition of progress made in recent years, of strong political determination and a shared outlook.

South stream will likely move forward, perhaps at a later stage, and under a newly elected BG government, as the country gears up for early parliamentary elections
