One of the many projects I worked on this winter. A cast bronze and glass cephalopod reliquary in collaboration with my Dad (sculptor) Peter Powning.

A shadow tomten on the longest night.
The svart-alf is of a different nature than the friendly tomten, he comes up from his deep lair to hunt in the moonlight. He is the shadow tomten.

I've read two of Astrid Lindgren's "Tomte" stories to my daughter these days... but I've a feeling that my little warrior princess would like your Svartálfar version even better :-)

The dark-tomte rides the night-warg.
This drawing was inspired by Harald Wiberg's beautiful paintings in Astrid Lindgren's Tomten book about a kindly tomten who looks after the animals and children during the long winter nights on a Scandinavian farm. The svart-alf, however, is of a different nature than the friendly tomten, he comes up from his deep lair to hunt in the moonlight. He is the shadow tomten. He tends to the needs of the wild creatures. He dreams of winter, of blood on the snow and the scent of prey. Sleep well this long night! Happy winter Solstice!

I've always loved Norse myth and especially the figure of Odin who is willing to go to any length to achieve wisdom. This drawing depicts the stanzas of the poem Runatal in which Odin hangs himself from an arcane tree in order to find the secret of the runes.
It runs —
"I know that I hung,
on a windy tree,
for all of nine nights,
wounded with a spear,
and given to Óðinn,
myself to myself,
on that tree,
which no man knows,
from what roots it runs."

+Jake Powning I couldn't agree more, I find all of it so fascinating. The ideologies that were associated with Odin and the other Norse gods are what I think are so interesting. The Norse gods were not perfect. They all had flaws and I think that helped perpetuate the Norse's not only love for life, but the ideology that death is not the end. Odin's constant search for wisdom, to me, is much like the other Norse god's tales, they weren't perfect and were always striving to achieve more.

Here's the finished drawing of Krampus, an alpine European Yule tradition. Krampus is the goat horned Christmas devil who deals with the naughty ones. There are Icelandic runes falling as snow, and he has a special bearded sporan.
This was also kind of inspired by the Finnish horror/comedy movie from 2010 "Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale"— If you haven't yet, watch it this christmas

This is a disk I drew depicting the three brothers Fafnir, Ottr and Regin— shape-shifters from the time of myth who's story is the beginning of the Germanic epic story of Sigurd the dragon slayer.

In honour of all things dwarfy!
This is a water colour painting I did back in 2010 for an Art Order challenge.
Deep in the subterranean world known as the underdark, a dwarf in heavy armour fights a hook horror.
The first book I ever read was the second edition Dungeons & Dragons player's handbook followed by the Lord of the Rings. I didn't get to play much, but I loved poring through the 2nd edition books and imagining the world they depicted, especially Larry Elmore and Jeff Easley's illustrations. This painting was a trip back into that universe.
