Publicly commenting on another's work is really a fairly new thing. We always had letters to the editor, but that was not he same. Commenting on a post with substance takes courage. Not everyone wants to expose themselves to public criticism of their comments, especially if they are taking issue with the blogger. You are right to address this in your class. it is a learned skill that needs to be taught, encouraged, and supported. It is a shift in culture that needs to occur if we are to be more open and collaborative in our approach to change. Thanks.

I would merely like to see them use honest-to-god research from actual researchers that publish in journals that don't accept crap. That's what I want for Christmas.

Very good blog, Tom, and you are correct on so many for the counts you listed.  We need to be more openly supportive of our teachers and their development as educators.

Thanks for sharing your insight here, Tom.  Sometimes I get so caught up in this connected world that I forget that the experience of putting one's own ideas out there can be quite intimidating.  I like watching this shift to a more public demonstration of learning with genuine activities but am reminded that developing the culture is key.  Creating a supportive environment for students to help them put themselves out there is so important.  Appreciate you pushing my thinking.

This being Women's History Month Share this: http://www.womenon20s.org/candidates
We're building a movement to put the portrait of a woman on our U.S. paper money. Americans everywhere can help compel this change by voting NOW for their choice of 15 great American heroes they most want to see on a new $20 bill.
