Now into its third year, DART International UK is currently preparing to mount its third operational deployment. Building on the success of previous operations to #Vanuatu and #NorthernSamar and sponsored by +Fletcher Stewart Ltd (Stockport), the Charity is sending a team of four volunteers to #SierraLeone.
'The DART project continues to grow and evolve,' explained operations manager Mike Metcalfe. 'We set out with a fairly straightforward concept: A disaster relief organisation through which volunteers from the #Arboriculture Industry could deploy their professional skills and experience to deal with obstructive trees and enable other aid agencies to operate more effectively. On the ground in Vanuatu and the Philippines, we worked alongside local volunteers who not only valued that enabling service, but showed a real appetite for learning the skills. Delivering training and donating equipment that would help to make those communities more resilient to future disasters was a natural development. This next deployment takes that a step further and represents a number of firsts for the #Charity: It's our first deployment to Africa, our first full collaboration with another Charity and the first time we've deployed a team on a dedicated training mission, rather than in direct response to a disaster; although I'd argue Sierra Leone has suffered more than its fair share of those recently!'
The DART team will be working alongside Rory's Well, a Gloucestershire based overseas development charity that operates in the #Pujehun district of southern Sierra Leone. Like DART they're a volunteer based organisation, delivering water aid and other projects to address malnutrition and high infant mortality in 17 communities across the region.
The Pujehun region is rural, remote and extremely poor even by Sierra Leone standards. Listed 177 out of 187 on the Human Development Index, with approximately 80% of the population living below the poverty line of $2 a-day, the country is still recovering from a decade of civil war and more recently, the #Ebola outbreak. Politically, Sierra Leone is now relatively stable and since ratifying the #KyotoProtocol in 2006, the government has taken steps to develop a national approach to tackling climate change, including the preservation and management of the country's vast forestry resources. Rainforests, mangroves and savannah forests cover an estimated 2.7m ha and host a high level of endemic and internationally rare and threatened species. Deforestation has been a longstanding environmental issue across West Africa, but supported by the #UNREDD+ initiative, the Sierra Leone Government has established a number of forestry reserves and implemented various forestry protection and management programmes. These include initiatives to tackle illegal logging and an outright ban on the export of unlicensed timber. Timber harvesting and replanting is now regulated to the extent that a government licensed operator has been appointed to support the DART deployment and provide the project with local advice and legal protection.
DART has undertaken to provide #Arborist training, PPE and equipment that will help to build livelihoods linked to sustainable forestry management and various other environmental programmes initiated by Rory's Well; a range of strategic development projects that have the full support of the region's MP Senesi Fawundu. I look forward to giving you some positive feedback on the deployment, following the team's return.

DART Deployment - Update 4

Evening all,

The team have departed ‪#‎NorthernSamar‬ and are on their way home. They're scheduled to arrive back at LHR tomorrow evening at 19:50. I haven't yet spoken to them directly, but we've received a few photographs from a Filipino contact illustrating their final day in-country and what appears to be a great send off from the community of ‪#‎SanJose‬!

I intend to meet the lads at Heathrow tomorrow to debrief the team, collect kit, etc. Over the next couple of days we'll put together a summary of everything that was achieved as a result of the team's efforts and your generous sponsorship.@Glendale Managed Services,@MakitaUK @Stein Products Limited, and www.forst-woodchippers.com

‪#‎Pasasalamat‬ (written behind the lads on the stage) translates to ‪#‎Thanksgiving‬.

In the meantime, I hope you enjoy the photographs!

Best regards
Mike

Once the grounds of the schools were made safe from fallen and‪#‎dangeroustrees‬, the team bought some building materials and are helping the locals to repair the ‪#‎schools‬ they have been working in.

This money has been raised by our corporate sponsors and via public donations, which we are very grateful of.

The feedback from the locals and the support at home for our work has been amazing, but like with any ‪#‎charity‬ funds are always an issue.

Please ‪#‎donate‬ what you can, as every penny goes towards our work and donating is simple use either of the following routes:

Thank you DART International UK Management & Operations Team

DART Update 3

Afternoon all,

One of the team managed to get into town this morning and access a wifi signal for long enough to transfer some photos and even a couple of short video clips of activities over the past couple of days, so I'll let the pictures do the talking:

First the obvious stuff: images 1 -3

Then there's the chainsaw service training: images 4 - 6

Safe chainsaw handling and basic arborist skills: 7 - 9

Team fixer James Enticknap-Green demonstrating his 'poker face' as the team purchase building materials to re-roof one of the badly damaged classrooms: images 10 & 11

And finally, a shot of the local wildlife. There's a unsubstantiated rumour that it moved as the flash activated, causing the photographer to make what was described by witnesses as, 'an unseemly and poorly controlled decent from the tree'. I'm sure it was actually much bigger than it looks Gary Bailey! Image 12
