I'm generally reticent about sharing any conversations I have with the Old Man on current controversies. We do talk about them, of course. He believes a father has an inherent natural right to discuss the state of the world world with his son, because otherwise how is the son to learn? But if that's a right we enjoy, it comes with responsibilities, and chief among them is to be circumspect.

But tonight, I think -- the Old Man delivered a dose of hope based in fact, and I think we can all use that. So I'm going to share. I can't say this is an exact transcript of our conversation, but it's close.

=====

ME: I just don't know which way is up any more. We've never had a national security adviser who was flipped by a foreign service, we've never had a sitting President implied in violations of the Logan Act, we've got a Congress that's a laughingstock, we've ... where does it end, Dad? Any other country would've said 'screw it' and had a military junta commit a coup by now.

DAD: Yes, exactly. And not only has there not been a coup here, no one here is even talking about a coup. Instead, today a cop marched one of the most powerful generals in the United States into a court of law, where he admitted to committing a felony against the People.

ME: Yeah, but ... that's small potatoes.

DAD: Is it? Ask a Zimbabwean, or a Chilean, or anyone outside of prosperous Western democracies. What we see as unprecedented dysfunction by the President, they see as us beginning to act like them. And what we see as small potatoes, they see as proof that our system of self-correction is still functional, which is very much unlike them. It gives them hope. Why shouldn't we likewise take hope?

ME: ... go on.

DAD: Robert, I'm not going to tell you all is well. All is clearly not well. Not only are major parts of our Executive in unprecedented dysfunction, the number one line of defense against that -- the Congress -- is in unprecedented dysfunction as well. Things are going off the rails, and the primary safety mechanism is broken. But.

ME: (...)

DAD: But. The Special Counsel is a backup safety mechanism. He can't do it all, but he can do some. And the Special Counsel is probably working with the State of New York's Attorney General. The NYAG can't do it all, but he can also do some. And we still have a vibrant free press that's screaming bloody murder 24/7 non-stop until the only thing any of us can think about is the latest scandal. They talk about how the President is assaulting the free press, and perhaps he is: but so far it's a spectacularly unsuccessful assault. Add up all the 'somes' and you discover the dysfunction of the Executive is surprisingly well-contained. It doesn't change the fact there's tremendous dysfunction, nor should we become complacent about it. But the checks on the system are working, Robert. We might be hitting our final safety mechanisms and praying to God they engage -- but they are engaging, and everyone is seeing them engage.

ME: (...)

DAD: So imagine how this looks to the developing world. Everything in the American political scene is imploding right now. Yet there's no junta, no talk of a coup. Generals are being marched before judges in handcuffs. Independent investigators are methodically bringing the powerful to the halls of justice. And all the while, a free press is covering it with gusto. We are dysfunctional, but our emergency playbook is working. And that's so much better than most places, where the only emergency playbook is "and then the military takes over". We're still functioning, Robert. Take some joy in the system. It is engaging.
