Oh look! A tutorial! Though this time it’s about posing >~< Also, this is how I set out a pose for a character and is only a reference.

So, here we go:

1) This might be a little difficult to do on first try, but the more you practice, the easier it is. First you sketch out an oval shape. Make it become a little thinner at the bottom to indicate the chin and wider at the top to indicate the top of the head. Make sure that it’s drawn so that the face is angled the way you want it to be.

2) Make a line along the y-axis and have it curve along with the oval shape. This will represent the placement of the nose and mouth. Now make a line for the x-axis which should also be curved. This will represent the placement of the eyes.

3) Start to sketch out the lines for the neck, shoulders and back. At the end of the back line, make a circle. This will be the placement of the waist and hips. Add some circles at the ends of the shoulder line. This will help attach the arms.

4) Start to draw the curves of the chest, waist and hips. Make sure it follows along the back line and connect with the circle.

5) Next, draw in the arms and any accessories that may interact with the arms. Make sure to also place in the hands and elbows.

6) Draw the shape of the first thigh. It should end around the knee.

7) Draw in the second thigh. Again, it should end at the knee.

8) I like drawing from the thighs up so this isn’t going to be a full body sorry. From here, erase any parts that won’t be present in the drawing (in this drawing, I erased the bottom of the thighs and the accessory line).

9) From here, you should be able to draw out the body and facial features. You might even include the accessory to make sure it fits with the drawing.

10) Now do the rest :^)

Some other tips for poses is to make sure the pose fits the character. Such as you wouldn't give a tough character a girly pose and vice versa. When you are drawing in the clothes, make sure they flow with the pose. Anything that drapes is going to hang off a leg or an arm that is sticking out. If your character has long hair, then that too will hang off the shoulders. Not straight down. Also think about the environment. If there is anything that could impact the pose, then make sure that is included as well.

I hope this helps a bit when it comes to mapping out poses and such. Make sure to use references if you’re not sure how something works. And if you can’t find what you’re after, pose in the mirror! It helps! >~<
