Shards have come to define the Ingress experience for me. Now that we're on the cusp of another event, I hope everyone gets to experience just what makes Ingress such a special game!
Back in early 2015, I remember getting drug into a very small hangout with a bunch of very concerned people. The topic? The Washington Monument had just been chosen as a shard target, and the knowledge wasn’t public yet. Over the next 2 months, we went from worrying that we’d disappoint our Resistance family across the globe, as DC was a historically green city, to dominating the event, scoring 13 shards ourselves, and helping Rotterdam hold the Enlightened to a shutout on their target. We watched our collective efforts become the definition of Resistance pride for years to come, and almost 2 years later, 13-0 and the Washington Monument still shine as a source of pride for our team.

Following the success of Shonin Shards, I realized just how special the community within the Resistance was, and how amazing what we had, not just at a local or regional level, but what it meant to have a true global community. With the emergence of new Shards, once again I feel the anxiety, anticipation, and excitement over such a cool and unique event.

If you feel panicked, know that it is without warrant. There is nothing but fun, memorable, and amazing experiences ahead. Nothing leading up to this point can compare you for the rush of linking that well fought shard off to Europe after a 3 day battle, or slamming it home after inching your way across each well-fought jump. If you feel uncertainty and worry, breathe. The Resistance has your back. With our community behind you, you can never fail. If you are excited and anticipating the fun ahead, simply want to get involved, head over to http://shards.blue ! We’ve compiled a great rundown of the upcoming event, and a signup to get involved.

Previous Shard events really define the Ingress experience for me, an experience I’ve come to treasure over the 4 years I’ve played. I’m hopeful with this new round, new faces can experience just how great Ingress can be.

OP: Beacon of Peace
DC-Area XFaction Field Art
February 4, 2017 — 1200-1530 hours

Washington, DC — Agents from both Enlightened and Resistance factions* came together to create field art as a show of solidarity in what many feel are uncertain times. It is our intent to show that respect for each other transcends any political, social, or religious ideology. We hope the art is seen as universal symbols of peace, of hope, and of the light we can bring into this world through love and understanding.

We chose the crescent moon to show our support of our Muslim brothers and sisters worldwide as well as our dissent with the current U.S. administration’s racist and xenophobic policies toward an entire religion, in particular the recent “Muslim Ban.” Similarly, we are disappointed in the current administration’s intentional decision to omit from its recent Holocaust Remembrance Day statement any recognition of the six million Jews that lost their lives during the Holocaust. In other cultures and religions (including paganism, Judaism, Islam, and many others), the emergence of a new moon represents a deliverance from darkness into light. We hope this light illuminates the hearts and minds of those that may disrupt peace and hope that the U.S. will move beyond these dark times to restore our status as a pillar of light, welcoming those who wish to make a better life.

The dove also has been used throughout modern history in many religious and secular instances as a representation of, or a message of, love and peace. We hope our dove’s wings carry this message of love and peace to every agent and person worldwide who feels even the tiniest bit of despair.

* We had originally hoped to make the field art both green and blue, but unfortunately were unable to do so with the personnel available on short notice. We hope to rectify that at some point in the future and re-throw the fields. Though the fields are blue, we truly would not have been successful without the cooperation of both teams in the area allowing us the canvas.

Background

Operation Mighty Mouse was originally conceived at the end of 2015 by Agent [REDACTED] after Agent [REDACTED] suggested Corolla as a spine for a field. A rough plan was made and keys were farmed by Agent [REDACTED] to Corolla. Leftover keys from Operation #FuckCancer to Newfoundland were graciously permitted to be retasked for this op, so that decided the eastern anchor. While the western anchor had not yet been determined, the keys to Corolla were shipped to Newfoundland and Chicago in January 2016, and the keys to Newfoundland were moved to Chicago soon after. The initial plan was for a late February throw. Soon into planning the op, the Milwaukee Obsidian Anomaly was announced, requiring many of the planners to focus their attention on the anomaly instead. A second date in March was selected as part of [REDACTED], but due to additional planning problems, the operation was put on hold indefinitely.

Meanwhile, the keys continued their journeys to their respective destinations. The Newfoundland keys reached their destination without issue. The Chicago-bound keys were not so fortunate. Originally entrusted with Agent [REDACTED], it was decided the keys would be transferred during the Milwaukee Anomaly. In a bold decision, and possibly in part due to exuberance over the excellent win on the frosty battlefield of Milwaukee, the transfer was attempted during the Resistance afterparty. Needless to say, this did not go according to plan. The keys were picked up by another Resistance agent, and after much searching (and a rather memorable G+ post in the anomaly community), the keys were located and moved to their final destination. More on this later.

The idea of the op was floated a few times in the ensuing months, but due to various anomalies, prior commitments, and high turnover/activity in Corolla during the summer months, the decision was made to select a fall date for the op. Eventually, Agent [REDACTED] made the decision that it was time to actually see the field happen. The date of October 2 was selected, but there still was no decision on the western anchor.

Initially, [REDACTED] was strongly considered as the location for the western anchor, but due to costs and the amount of travel time required, the location was dismissed as candidate. Instead, Agent [REDACTED] suggested the Keweenaw Rocket Range as a possible anchor. At the time, no agent had yet captured the portal due to its extreme location at the end of the Keweenaw Peninsula and signal difficulties. This seemed an ideal location to serve as the western anchor for the field and the planners quickly settled on the portal as the anchor. Agent [REDACTED] was long known for a desire to farm keys to this portal, and the planners decided to surprise the agent by taking the agent for a trip to collect keys while also throwing one of the largest fields over North America. Operation Surprise [REDACTED] was a go!

By way of backstory, the Keweenaw Rocket Range was a launch pad used by NASA between 1964 and 1971 to launch rockets for meteorological data collection. It was one of six sites located around the country, the most famous of which is the NASA Wallops Island Facility located in Virginia. At the Keweenaw site, several types of rockets were fired, among the first of which were known as Mighty Mouse rockets. As further cover for the operation from being learned of by Agent [REDACTED], the planners decided to name the operation Mighty Mouse. While the planners were discussing the use of the Rocket Range, Resistance Agent NUXI was noted to have captured the portal. The planners immediately got in touch with NUXI to determine how the capture had been managed, which [REDACTED].

Operation is a Go

We now had a date, anchors, and throwers. We began to recruit boots, particularly for the northern lane through Canada and the densest portion of the western lane through Virginia, particularly the Norfolk and Newport News areas. As the operation date approached, more boots and intel operators were recruited for the rest of the lanes. Links were allowed to decay, standing fields and links were slowly reconfigured.

The week before the operation was….chaotic. To start, Agent [REDACTED] informed the planners that several keys to Corolla were missing from the capsule that had been lost in Milwaukee. Ultimately it was determined that four layers would have to be abandoned due to this unfortunate circumstance. Additionally, after weeks of low activity, 2 ENL agents, pokermark17 and Stargazer777, appeared in Corolla and began causing havoc. Later in the week, 2 other ENL agents, Relinator and bzen, captured the Rocket Range portal in Keweenaw. Finally, the link from Fishers Island to Grand Turks was spoofed down (more on this later). Despite these challenges, the planners pushed ahead and made ready for operation day.

Saturday came. Agents began the long drive to Keweenaw (and some may have run out of gas in the process). Orders were given for soft clearing of ENL links across the western lane. Agents began moving towards their targets in Canada. Operators continually monitored the lanes. It was noted that ENL Agents pokermark17 and Stargazer777 had left Corolla, and Agent TardisTraveler prepared the spine for the next day by fielding over the portals. Saturday evening, ENL agents shot links from Bermuda to Montauk Point, Long Island. Agent gunnbda responded to requests to drop the links that evening, and no additional links were made. Agents continued to clear throughout the evening and early into Sunday morning, and in the Pennsylvania area contended with dense fog.

Late Saturday evening, ENL agents in the DC area began a large starburst operation. Intel operators closely monitored ENL activity, though ultimately only a handful of links ended up blocking the lane. Agents were rerouted to handle these new blockers, and the rest of the operation proceeded.

Saturday night, agents eventually arrived in Copper Harbor, well past their expected arrival time. It was determined that a recon mission to the Rocket Range was required to determine any difficulties to overcome. The road proved to be very rough; agents travelled for over ten miles along a rocky, muddy path on their way to the Rocket Range. Because of the difficulties encountered travelling out to the range, the team decided to spend the night. Testing quickly became the real thing. Spending the night was not without its perks, however. Agents enjoyed beautiful stargazing, particularly watching the Milky Way and the Aurora Borealis light up the night.

All agents awoke Sunday morning, and the final stages of clearing began. By approximately 5:30am, the entire Ohio and Pennsylvania section of the lane was clear. Agents were in place to drop the blocks remaining in Michigan, Bermuda, and Canada, and agents continued clearing in Virginia. At 6:10, orders were sent to the anchor agents to inoculate. A few minutes later, orders were sent to the Canadian agents to drop their blockers and for the northern link to be thrown, and quickly after that for the first link to be thrown along the western and eastern lanes. FIELD! A whoop went up among the intel operators and boots as the first of 19 control fields was created, with a MU of 52.5 million. Agent TardisTraveler Jarvised the field over the rest of the spine portals and links to the bottom spine portal were made. The final remaining microblocks were cleared in Virginia, and orders were relayed to the anchor teams to throw the remaining links. By approximately 6:50am, all fields had been established, and all fields made the 7am checkpoint.

A few hours later, ENL Agent okneeme appeared in Corolla and began taking out the spine. Minutes later, the Newfoundland anchor was spoofed down by Enl “agent” leecvon. Shortly after that, the Keweenaw Rocket Range portal was spoofed down by Resistance “agent” sthvrryhged. Agent okneeme continued her assault on the Corolla spine after meeting with Agent TardisTraveler. Despite the spine being killed repeatedly by several agents throughout the day, and the anchor portals having been killed, portions of the field continued to ghost. For the next 24 hours, several layers continued to make checkpoints and prevent agents throughout the Northeast from linking and fielding (sorry about that!).

Notes were compared, and it was determined that the final MU total was 997,710,365, just 2.2 million MU short of 1 billion. Close enough. With the additional 4 layers that had been planned, this easily would have surpassed 1 billion MU captured.

Spoofers Suck

Regarding the spoof of the Fishers Island to Grand Turks link, planners treated the link as if it still was up. Two Resistance agents (Eags and Heiff) were dispatched to Fishers Island to kill the portal there and drop the imaginary link. The lane was cleared legitimately. Spoofers know no faction, and it is unfair for the planners to be held responsible for something entirely outside their control when every step was taken to legitimize the operation. Spoofing is something that must be addressed by Niantic, there’s only so much we can do as players.

Thanks

A great deal of thanks goes to the agents who travelled hundreds of miles to move keys, drop links (or sometimes not), and be awake early on a Sunday morning. In particular, the planners would like to thank Agents [REDACTED], [REDACTED], [REDACTED], [REDACTED], and [REDACTED] for their efforts. Particularly, the efforts of [REDACTED] were invaluable to the success of this op.

Fireworks in the harbor last night were pretty great, despite the low cloud cover. Made for some really interesting colors all over the sky, and a lot of the bigger bangs happening out of direct view, and then falling into view.

Towards the end of the event, a duck decided to land about 12 feet off the back of the boat, and soon enough we had a dog overboard! This is Evie's sorry face.
