We had been together 30 years ----- and he had gotten me through the best and worst of times, just as I had for him --- we were "we" and whatever happened, we were in it together.
It just happened that this song kept coming up on the radio - on the hospital music station - on the clinic Muzak. We started dancing to it - which was a challenge as Michael was either in bed, a chair , a guerney or a wheelchair -----
So we learned to chair /bed/gurney/wheelchair danced to this - including dips at the end every time. Leukemia could not stop "us" We danced more than we had in years in fact. Take THAT, leukemia!
He did go into remission - but ironically tripped and fell hitting his head and dying of subdural hematomas. It has been a shock and a hard time -
But when I heard the song today, I realized it truly is still one of our songs - but that "best thing" includes so many people who have been there for/with us ---- both us two and our kids, family, his friends etc....
All despite time zones, work schedules, personal challenges. I will always cherish our 30 years of couplehood. It is an added bonus that his love prepared me for being able to see, respond, trust and .... participate ..... in other kinds of love - friendship, family, colleagues, kids, grandkids, neighbors, former parishioners and so much more.... Thank you for being the best thing that has ever happened to us - and now me.
