Leopold's offers the cozy ambiance (gemuetlichkeit) of a traditional village gasthaus that one might find in Alpine Austria, Bavaria or northern Italy, viewed through the keen eye of San Francisco's

Leopold's gets very busy on weekends. They don't take reservations, you have to go there and put your name on a list. There is a small bar area where you can wait and have a drink. It's pretty crowded so it's also very noisy. The dishes are authentic Austrian - a classic is the Viennese Schnitzel.

Great Austrian food with the atmosphere, inviting hospitality, and comforting beers to make you feel at home. A friend took me when I was visiting, just as SF was starting to cool down, and it's a great spot to pop in late night for activity and to get warmed up from the inside out!

My Take: Austrian Gastropub that is ALWAYS crowded | Went For: weekday dinner | The Vibe: innovated dishes draw in the crowd, while the drinks/beer draw in the masses after the work hours | Special Dish: Baked Trout!!! | Avoid Their: n/a | Price Point: most entrees are under $30.00 | The Service: even when they're crowded, the servers are still on point | Reservations: highly recommended | FYI, FRIENDS: I wish they would switch out their uncomfortable wooden chairs -- Eat up, Kimmie

I know many regulars are strict on calling the type of food that's served here (Bavarian, Austrian or German), but regardless of which you prefer, most would agree that it's the best of that type of food they've had in San Francisco. When you walk in the door, you're greeted by a friendly host and friendlier owner. The waitresses all wear dirndls and the place has a very Oktoberfest in Munich feel to it with the bench tables. Unfortunately, they do not take reservations but no worries, you can sit yourself at the bar and have a few pints or liters while you wait. Going back to the food, it's simply outstanding. From the pork to beef to schnitzels, everything is full of flavor and very tender.

Ok, it's not Bavaria....but it's as close as you can get! Upon walking into the establishment, I felt as if I walked back in time to when I was at Oktoberfest. It was loud, beer was plentiful and the food was meaty. A man's dream come true beer comes in large sizes and food is pretty meat on meat. There is a large bench for seating and smaller tables in the corners. It truly was a German experience and I can't wait to go back in my lederhosen!

We LOVED Leopold's when we lived in Russian Hill. A boisterous, fun atmosphere where the owner comes around and talks to everyone. Great beers on tap, and a fun getaway place in Russian Hill
