Kira Peikoff, 28, had her DNA tested by three direct-to-consumer companies - Genetic Testing Laboratories, Pathway Genomics, and 23andMe - and the results didn't agree.

Different companies choose which SNPs to read. By comparing the technical reports provided with the results, it was clear that each test relied on a different set SNPs to assess the same condition, like coronary heart disease. Each test studied four to 15 markers, with almost zero overlap, though two tests reached similar conclusions about her odds. This is not necessarily news to an expert, but unknown to most patients. Patient education is critical when it comes to medical genomics.

The Personalized Medicine Conference (PMWC) 2014 Silicon Valley on Jan. 27-28, has added a new track (Track 4 Advocates and Patients), which explores how personalized medicine transforms cancer and engages the community. Come join us at this exciting event.
