The ham-handed title got my attention, but the point is fair: American cities are growing beyond the capacity of their water (and sewer) systems. Western water-poor areas are a problem, and lawns are a huge part of that: "...In the western United States, almost half of the water... [in struggling cities] goes outdoors to lawns." However, raising all water bills penalizes poor people, and "it takes more than a... $100 month water bill to get someone with a lush green lawn to change their behavior."

Population growth and global warming are stressing our water supplies. Here's how we'll adapt.

A good guide for English speakers, both native and secondary.
The English language is complicated. There are a lot of words and not all of them have logical meanings. Here are 25 common words you may have wrong!

I knew about enormity, but not really about fortuitous, although it seemed sensible and vaguely familiar. I agree that it implies good fortune, even though there is such a thing as bad fortune, just like good luck and bad luck, much like fortunately and luckily imply good fortune and good luck. But the fact that it implies something lucky and not just something positive is worth keeping in mind.

Great storm photos from the Boston Globe. Our house is on a hillside, a mile from the water, so flooding wasn't an issue. We still haven't completely dug out our garage, so even though our cars aren't buried in snow, they're not going anywhere at the moment.
The blizzard of 2015 blasted the region with wind-whipped snow that piled nearly 3-feet high in some places.

According to the White House pool report, "One onlooker [who shook hands with Obama] wore a large horse head but it's unclear what message he hoped to convey."

What was this mystery man's message?
President Obama was a hit with the bar crowd in Denver. Obama was greeted with an offer of a marijuana joint when he mingled with the locals, first at the Wazee Supper Club and later at the Wynkoop Brewing Company.

Even an increasingly east Asian neighborhood needs good westernized Chinese food, and you'll soon notice that although the staff are Chinese, none of the patrons are. That's fine, because Great Chow has mastered the art of one of the finest western Chinese dishes: General Gao's chicken. The somewhat recently expanded and remodeled restaurant looks nicer, and now features a sushi bar, though it isn't their primary strength. Price is a bit too high, but they seem to do good business, so the market sustains it. For "authentic" Cantonese cooking, you have many other options in the area, and if you want your "Chinese" cooked and served with tiki drinks by grizzled whites, you've got "Cathay Pacific" down the street.

One of the better Mexican restaurants run by gringos. La Paloma has a great house salsa, which includes shredded carrots. Don't knock it til you try it. Loses a few points for long waits and a failure to include rice and beans with every order.
