Lucene Revolution is the biggest open source conference dedicated to Apache Lucene/Solr. I recently gave a keynote presentation at Lucene Revolution that described the critical role that search and Lucene have in building next generation products that understand professional reputation and relevance. The talk described how data science and machine learning have been applied at LinkedIn to grow, interpret, and index data around topical reputation ...

Yes, we run classifiers trained on the different sense clusters detected for each phrase to decide which sense was intended.

If you can measure it, you can make it better or make money from it. That's what companies should learn from mining their data analytics properly. In a panel at VentureBeat's DataBeat 2014 conference, the consensus was that companies are leaving a lot of money on the table by not getting as much ...

Unfortunately, I've met too many managers who agree they should hire people smarter than themselves, only to not give them the freedom to act. In this way, they act more like people with collectibles - willing to pay a premium price just to put nice things on a shelf. As managers of high performers the work doesn't end at finding and hiring them. It's our job to create the right culture to keep them, to encourage them, and to create the opportuni...

REQUEST TO REVIEW:
Dear Professor LeCun,

Given your expertise in the field and, particularly, the link between the topics faced in submission XXXX and your research activities, I am inviting you to be a reviewer for the above mentioned article.

I would very much appreciate it if you could promptly find the time to give a quick look at this article and decide whether you can accept the invitation to review it. If you kindly accept the invitation, please return your report within 4 weeks after you accepted the invitation.

MY RESPONSE:
Dear Professor YYY,

Although this paper seems to fall squarely in my area of expertise, I must decline to review it.

I have pledged to no longer do any volunteer work, including reviewing, for non-open access publications, which unfortunately includes pretty much every publication from [commercial-publisher].

In fact [commercial-publisher] is one of the worst offenders in the rear-guard battle of commercial scientific publishers against open access. Why should people pay $31 to read individual papers when they could get them for free if they were published by JMLR?

Incidentally, I have proposed a new publishing model based on open
access and an open, post-publication reviewing system.
It is described here:
http://yann.lecun.com/ex/pamphlets/publishing-models.html
Your comments and suggestions would be welcome.

We are experimenting with this new model in the context of the
first International Conference on Learning Representations (ICLR 2013)
representationlearning2013

Sincerely,

Creating intelligent systems to automate and enable better decisions. Entrepreneur, Investor, ex Principal Data Scientist @LinkedIn. Machine Learning, Product, Networks
Introduction
I'm an entrepreneur, data scientist, and product manager based in San Francisco. My main focus is building intelligent systems to automate manual processes and help people make better decisions. I specialize in solving difficult algorithmic challenges, leading cross-functional teams, and developing engaging product features powered by data and machine learning.

Most recently, I applied my skills to the consumer internet space at LinkedIn, the world's largest professional network, where I was an early member of the data science team. As Principal Data Scientist, I led a data product team focused on reputation, search, and shipping data driven products.  I was also the creator of Skills & Endorsements, one of the fastest growing new products in LinkedIn's history.

Before joining LinkedIn, I was Director of Analytics at Juice Analytics and a Senior Research Engineer at AOL Search.  In a previous life, I developed price optimization models for Fortune 500 retailers, studied machine learning at MIT, and worked on Biodefense projects for DARPA and The Department of Defense. I have a B.S. in Mathematics and Physics from Brandeis University and research experience in Biology and Neuroscience.
