I have had the pleasure of interviewing Todd Burpo, author of Heaven is for Real. Like me, he is a Wesleyan pastor in a rural setting. His integrity and respect he has from his ministry peers(before and after the book) is stellar. So to see him attacked in this forum by people who do not know him grieves my spirit.

+Vicky Jenkins re: " I really don't believe anyone is attacking anyone when Jesus Christ or the bible is lied about..."

I don't think that anyone is "lying" - that is, deliberately telling a falsehood - about Jesus or Heaven or the Bible, here. They're telling a story about an unprovable "vision." Myself, I feel no reason to take their vision literally or as a fact, but neither do I have any reason to call what they've done a "lie."

You provided a bunch of verses that directly or indirectly mention "heaven," but are those verses to be taken literally? Or was the text told in a metaphorical manner? When Jesus said, "In my Father's house there are many mansions..." what does that mean? A mansion IS a house. Does that mean that Jesus was literally conveying that God has a literal "house" and that house is literally large enough to hold literal "mansions..."? Or was he speaking metaphorically?

The answer is, we don't know and it really doesn't matter. The point Jesus was making was one of God's extravagant love for humanity, not the layout of God's House Plans.

Will you be angry at God if you get to Heaven and find out there is no literal mansion for you and God tells you, "it was hyperbole and metaphor... I'm sorry, I thought that would be clear... Sorry you misunderstood..."? Or will you call Jesus a "liar" for misstating things?

That goes to my earlier point: The Bible is a book of Truth about Grace. It is not a literal house plan, not a scientifically accurate treatise on the nature of the afterlife, not a book of mere FACTS, but a book of great Truths. We must not let our desire to name "facts" interfere with our search for Truth. And one clue that we are perhaps getting the Truth lost in our adherence to "facts" is in how we disagree with others. Do we disagree with love and grace? Do we acknowledge that, "When I say heaven has a large house with literal mansions in it for each of us, I mean to say, that is how I understand it, but I could be mistaken..."?? Or, do we say, "I can not be mistaken. If you disagree with my opinion on how to interpret a text, it is like you are disagreeing with God!"

Embrace grace, that would be my point.
