What Scientists Mean When they Say the Universe Might Be a Hologram

The title of this article made me very suspicious. These sort of titles usually imply sensationalism and nonsense content. However, I was pleasantly surprised. It's a nice description of ADS/CFT for the interested layperson. And it uses an image from my blog (properly attributed) to boot.

One of the pillars of quantum mechanics is the photoelectric effect. Light below a certain frequency is unable to dislodge electrons from a material even when provided by a high power beam. The argument in almost every textbook, due to Einstein, says that the energy must be arriving in discrete packets, photons, and that you need a single packet on its own to have enough energy to kick out an electron.

If it's an advanced enough textbook then there will be a later chapter on time-dependent perturbation theory where it is shown how to calculate the rate at which electrons are kicked from one energy level to another as a function of the incoming electromagnetic wave. In almost every single textbook the argument treats the incoming wave as a classical field, demonstrating how you can in fact explain the photoelectric effect without recourse to photons.

Disappointingly these books don't simply self-annihilate in a cloud of contradiction.

(Of course the photoelectric effect is still good  evidence for QM. Just not in the way textbooks claim.)

Enhanced Gisin's Theorem: Physicists demonstrate new violations in Local Realism in Quantum Mechanics for the first time! 

Is the first time that the theorem has been generalized from pure states to mixed ones, and includes the original Gisin's theorem as a special case

"(Phys.org)—Erwin Schrödinger once famously stated that quantum entanglement is "the characteristic trait of quantum mechanics" that distinguishes it from classical theories. Now in a new paper, physicists have demonstrated a new family of entangled states that violates the principle of "local realism"—an intuitive concept that is a standard feature of classical theories, but disturbingly at odds with quantum theory.

When two objects are entangled, a measurement on one object instantly affects the state of the other, even more quickly than light could travel between them. This instantaneous action goes against our intuition that an object should be affected only by its immediate surroundings, a concept known as locality.

For years, physicists struggled to definitively answer the question of whether or not entangled states truly violate local realism—that is, do they violate either locality or realism, where realism is simply the assumption that objects exist even when they're not being observed?

Although it was long suspected that at least some entangled states violate local realism due to how they seem to instantly influence each other, it wasn't until 1991 that physicist Nicolas Gisin at the University of Geneva quantitatively demonstrated that all pure entangled states must violate local realism. This result is now known as Gisin's theorem.

In quantum mechanics, a "pure" entangled state is one that is clearly defined. However, the vast majority of entangled states are "mixed" to some degree, meaning they consist of a combination of multiple types of pure states. Although Gisin's theorem holds only for pure states, over the years physicists have extended the theorem by showing that some other types of states can also violate local realism.

In a new paper to be published in Nature Scientific Reports, Jing-Ling Chen, et al., from institutions in China and Singapore, have demonstrated that all mixed states that obey a certain steering property must violate local realism. This new family of entangled mixed states that violate local realism may lead to a better fundamental understanding of quantum correlations, as well as simplify the implementation of some quantum information protocols.

"Our enhanced Gisin's theorem is the first time that the theorem has been generalized from pure states to mixed ones, and includes the original Gisin's theorem as a special case," Chen, a physicist at Nankai University in China and the National University of Singapore, told Phys.org."

The theory called Holographic Space-time is an attempt to generalize String Theory so that one can discuss local regions of space-time. It's key feature is a mapping between quantum concepts and the geometry of space-time. Causality conditions are imposed, as in quantum field theory, by insisting that things which cannot have mutual quantum interference are things that are causally separated.

Menurut kajian mekanik Kuantum yang mana juga telah diuji di makmal dan diaplikasikan di dunia sebenar selama 70 tahun, setiap jisim di dalam dunia ini bersifat waham iaitu tidak diketahui di mana kedudukan sebenar. This is an interesting and beautifully presented documentary about Quantum Mechanics that explains the distinction of probability and also emphasizes how important Quantum Mechanics generally is to reality -- one particular prediction stated is that without Quantum Mechanics, modern technology, such as electronics, would cease to function, thus the world would remain in the Dark Ages.

Famous theoretical physicist and atheist Dr. Albert Einstein is also featured prominently in this video for introducing the scientific quantum physics theory of "entanglement."  He is also noted for his controversial views about chance (he strongly favoured certainty).
