‘Social in the community’ will be a compered panel discussion with some of the leading presences in public sector social media around Glasgow. By speaking with the organisations that keep the city safe, happy and moving smoothly – and  that look at metrics other than sales, there should be lessons here for every organisation keen to build engagement with its fans.

This Pecha Kucha night will invite speakers from a variety of backgrounds to discuss how social media has impacted on their personal or professional lives – and to predict how social media, and their experience of it, might change further in the future.

Social media has begun to change the world that we live in – democratising communication and changing the way that brands interact with consumers.

But right now, as of 2012, it has been just 22 years since the invention of the world wide web and Twitter has just turned six.Yet in the UK alone Twitter already has 10m users – and that is dwarfed by Facebook’s 39m UK users. The recent past has been exciting – but as social development accelerates, the future will be even more so.

Social media offers unparalleled opportunities for extraordinary children and young people to connect and make a difference all over the world. Our guest speaker David Payne experienced this first hand when his nine year-old daughter’s school meals blog, Never Seconds, became an overnight sensation.

In this session, we’ll be looking at some of the ways social media has been used to enhance learning, both in and out of the classroom. All donations made at the event will go to Mary’s Meals, the charity supported by the blog.

Please note that this event, as with all Social Media Week Glasgow events, will be oversubscribed – so please arrive in plenty of time to secure your place.

For those that haven't read our weekly Social Soup blog, we recommend you take a look. Now on number 13, we highlight some of the top social stories from the past week, in a handy bite-size portion. This week we've taken a look at how brands are using social to extend their reach at London Fashion Week, Twitter's milestone, and how Claire's got it all wrong. Take a look over on the Yomego blog.

This is proving controversial in the office: Study says "popular Twitter accounts engage less, and share more links." I think you can paint the statistics lots of different ways.

Facebook's introduction of Timeline for pages was the main focus of last week's Social Soup. We covered all the main talking points along with a video roundup on our blog. Head on over and get some while it's still hot!

Is having only one page admin on G+ driving you mad? There are already several third party apps that can help you bypass the problem until Google adds this functionality. Check out Involver, Vitrue, Buddy Media and good old HootSuite. TweetDeck doesn't offer G+ functionality yet, but you never know...

We like this and we think the brands we work with will too - G+ will be adding the multiple page admins function in Q1 2012 - well played, Google!
