INISHBOFIN SET FOR A SUMMER OF GREAT MUSIC
For 21 years the Inishbofin Concerts have consistently attracted the cream of Irish music to Inisbofin, entertaining local islanders and visitors alike, and this year is no exception. This year’s series of concerts kicks off on July 18th with the ever-popular Eleanor Shanley, whose uniquely soulful voice, and engaging relationship with her audience, have won her fans and accolades around the globe. On July 25th the singer/songwriter Wallis Bird brings her unique sound to Inishbofin for the first time. Regularly compared to the young Janis Joplin, Bird combines elements of traditional folk music, blues and funk with a rock sound, her style ranging from soft folk to power ballads. On August 1st singer/songwriter Jack O’Rourke takes to the stage. His debut album “Dreamcatcher” was released to much critical acclaim in September 2016, and O’Rourke has been favourably compared to Bowie, Kate Bush, John Grant and Emmylou Harris. August 8th sees the welcome return of Mick Flannery. A singer/songwriter of the first order, whose voice has been described as ‘pained, gravelly, and powerful. Recorded or live, it carries through, and stops you in your tracks,’ Flannery wowed the Inishbofin audiences in his previous concerts, and this is sure to be another sell-out gig. On August 15th, by popular demand, the award-winning Declan O’Rourke takes to the stage. Recognized internationally as a singer/songwriter of exceptional skill, O’Rourke is a performer who revels in intimate performance venues, and this concert is likely to be yet another special performance for his growing army of fans. Next up, on August 22nd are two of the greatest stars of Irish traditional singing: Maighréad and Triona Ní Dhomhnaill. The sisters (along with their brother Mícheál) formed the legendary group Skara Brae while still in their teens. Tríona went on to join The Bothy Band, one of the most significant groups in the history of Irish music. Their close harmony singing of classic songs never fail to enthral any audience, and this will be a rare opportunity to hear the sisters performing together. Rounding up the series of concerts, on August 29th will be the group Old Hannah, a four piece band whose music combines roots, early bluegrass and Irish traditional music. Four part harmonies are at the core of their unique sound, and their always lively performances won’t fail to raise the spirits and get the feet tapping with their music.
Concerts take place on Tuesdays in the Dolphin Hotel, and commence at 9.30 sharp. Admission to all concerts is €20 for adults, and €10 for children. For more information contact the Dolphin Hotel at 095-45991, or email: info@dolphinhotel.ie
