whats up
Ok, so I forwarded this really cool picture of Eowyn from the Lord of the Rings this morning. But it got me thinking about the books.

The Fellowship was really a boys club, eh?

I know that sounds silly and really obvious, and this isn't the fist time I have ever thought that. But over time on G+ I keep meeting more and more people trying to educate others on the rights of women how they are viewed in a lot of ways. I don't want that to sound as trite as it does. The point is that due to some people I have met on here, my eyes are a bit more open to seeing things.

As a small child (age 8) in oklahoma, this was not an issue. It as just 9 characters going out to fight evil and I fell in love with the idea/purpose of it. I was drawn into the story. I went into a fit when Gandalf died and didn't speak to anyone for a whole day because I was upset.

But that was many, many, years ago. I read a lot of fantasy. I don't care whom or what sex the characters as long as they are awesome. I also know that for the longest time, those characters were men. Most of my life I did not give this much thought. Not because I thought this or that, but mostly do simple ignorance.

Back to Lotr. I love the fellowship. I grew up wanting to be an elf like Legolas, or a ranger like Strider. I wrote my own lord of the rings stories (thank god they are gone cuz they were awful). Even the hobbits were brave in their own fashion.

And what do you get for women throughout the story?

Goldberry-I actually to fight the urge to skip past the Tom Bombadil section of the book due to how annoying both of them were.
Arwen-Yes, she loves Arragorn, and lord knows they upped her story in the movies. But in the books? She gets about as much page time as Rosie Cotton.
Giladrial-she was cool, but only there for a few pages. Her role was an important role, don't get me wrong. But she gave the rest, advice, and gifts ans sent them on their way.

Then comes Eowyn. All she wants to do is fight. To have a chance to make a difference and stand up for those who can't. Sounds grea right? Nope, you are female, you get to stay home.

So what does she do? Disobeys her father. Disguises herself as a man. Takes Merry with her (no one else wanted too), rides off with the Rohan to meet certain death.

Oh, and with Merry's help, defeats he Witch King, the most powerful of the Nazgul.

Was this act(s) any less heroic than any other in the stories? Yes, we all know the story of Frodo and the courage of Samwise. Not diminishing them at all. But what she did kind of blows my mind when put in context. Actually all of them could be, who expects a woman or a hobbit to be big damn heroes (at least in the world of middle earth).

I am not saying I have not thought about some of this before. But damn if it all didn't hit me at once and made m look at these books I have read over 50 times from a new angle.

Still love them. Still suggest them, but Eowyn might be my favorite character from the books at this point.

wow that's cool!!
I am not a scientist, but I love this stuff and hope that this page isn't just for professional scientists.

Here's my first question:  I have this app called Zooborns. Every day there are photos of a newborn animal at a real zoo.  (See zooborns.com.) Every day a surprise, and even the ugliest animals are cute.  So my question is about why it feels so good?  Just intellectual? Or I have heard that it's like a little dose of oxytocin.  Is that literally true? Does my brain work that quickly to give me a chemical dose of love and happiness?
