So I get a message on reddit today from someone who was looking for shark dolls on ebay saying they saw a listing of someone using my etsy photos and listing text to sell shark hats. They had straight copied the text and removed my etsy link from the photos. Eventually I found a way to report them to ebay with a link to my etsy listing (they don't make it easy), so I'll just have to wait and see if that listing gets removed.

I did wonder what you would actually get it you ordered it. I decided to do an ebay search for "shark hat." Sure enough there were more listings, although most of these one's used their own photos and text. But they probably do show what you would get, a cheap knockoff of my design. One uses one of my photos but photoshops in pics of the knock-off. They're close but they wouldn't pass my quality control, I mean it kind of looks like a dolphin. But the tail especially looks awful and kind of looks like was put on upside down.

Looking through my sold items I've sold 3 blue tie-dye sharks to china one each in 2011, 2013 and 2014. The latter 2 to the same person. Just about all the ebay listings are shipped from china. And selling for a third of what I charge. Though it does kind of tell me what they would cost to have them mass produced.

Clothing design is a gray area with regards to copyright. Would hats count as clothing? So probably the most I can do is report people who are using my photos. And they're in china too. gah!

So I'm feeling a bit depressed now. Both in feeling ripped-off (which may have happened before too, have you seen those squidhats you can get at amusement parks like six flags? They look an awful lot like my original squidhat design, but not as much as this shark.) but also in wishing that I could have my own products massed produced and sold in shops so I wouldn't have to be sewing all day. I have no idea how or have the knowledge/connections to even get started on that.
