Bernice tries on a new identity and finds it too delightful to give up.
Those pesky pronouns! At first glance, the title of Fitzgerald’s story, “Bernice Bobs Her Hair,” leads readers to assume that Bernice bobbed her own hair, but as readers read on, they learn that pronoun referents are not so e...

Writers read and study and know.
When I enjoyed all the chores, joys, and life within the walls of my own classroom, I coached students to read with understanding, and that required a carefully packed literary suitcase. The first items, resting across the ba...

Ambition, youth, and hard work: potent forces that make dreams come true.
Most of us work decades, saving and scrimping as we can, to retire and live the life we’ve dreamed. Rob Shields, Nick Hurff, and Michael Karas, twenty-somethings, decided to skip to the head of the line. They decided to live ...

"I wanted to re-visit the language and wince once more with characters who suddenly see themselves as others might, usually unfavorably."
Literature lives. More titles appear daily. I despair of ever keeping up so I don’t look back often. Recently I have, pulling from my shelf a heavy paperback: The Short Stories of F. Scott Fitzgerald: A New Collection, edited...

Below is my review from several months ago. Today a different crew, Brian Tibbals and Timothy Rodgers, completed the year's work agreed to with an annual contract. They were conscientious and thorough. I'm fortunate to have had two different crews, both of which were excellent. We paid for a contract so that Stanley Steemer (SS) would clean our carpets for a full year and on the first visit, our ceramic tile. We decided upon SS after using a competitor several times and comparing the work to SS's. At first, we thought we'd made a grave mistake. The grout was virtually untouched, the crew rushed, one crew member moved a piece of exercise equipment onto damp carpet--against instructions--and left a stain, and one of the two crew members had to be instructed to protect my furniture from the now damp carpet. Mr. Stanley, in Kansas City, after several unsuccessful attempts to correct the problems locally, resolved our issues and the job was redone, completed correctly. Our next two carpet cleanings were just average; we decided never to pay for a year's contract again as the savings are marginal and the service less than spectacular. One problem we had was the crews rushed through the job so for the next to last cleaning, I asked for a senior crew and was promised one. Little did I know that scheduling has been centralized in Kansas City and that promises made there do not trickle down to local crews. Worse, the crews spend as much time driving long distances from house to house as they do cleaning because long-distance schedulers, unfamiliar with the areas, send them hither and yon to fill a 12+ hour day. When the crew arrived after 6 p.m., I asked how much experience they had; it could not be considered "senior" unless turnover at SS is extremely high. I told them I'd been dissatisfied and that I expected them to do an excellent job in spite of the late hour on a Friday. If they could not, I was willing to send them on their way and reschedule. They put in the time and delivered! These guys, Mr. Selby and Mr. Morris, were conscientious and careful. Instead of 40-45 minutes and out the door, they worked my 5 rooms and a couch until they were clean. I will request them again for my last contract cleaning. SS should know that these two represent the company very well.
