I think this guy doesn't understand technology.  The article is written from a 10,000 foot view.  He's looking at packaged distributions of Linux and the folks assembling distributions for the masses are generally not the same as the low level kernel developers I think about when "Linux devs" are referred too.  However, he does have a good point.  I am one of the core developers for Cadillac CUE which is a Linux based system that drives the new LCD panels in the new Cadillacs.  There is heavy graphics and eye candy that would not be possible without the low level kernel code being capable.  So this is the reason why I think the author doesn't understand technology.  That's because in order to pull off the eye candy, you need the support from the lower levels.  You need solid video drivers that work & support the latest standards, you need folks who know how to make intuitive GUIs which, sometimes (not always), rely on the latest GUI controls created by others.  So it's not like a small group of people sitting around making Ubuntu or RedHat.  These distributions stand on the shoulders of giants in my opinion without who's efforts he wouldn't have an article to write about to begin with.
