Oh...Debbie....I clicked on your post fearing the worst. I didn't know Pearl had become ill. But reading your words I know you are exactly where I was three years ago when I suddenly lost my Newman at age 8. I wrote a long post expressing much of what you wrote yourself. The unbearable pain. I've had dogs all my life and I have dogs now. But Newman was my "One". The dog I was so connected to. I know all about the routines and how empty and meaningless everything else is after our little one's death. I had just recently heard of another dog that died from a tumor on the heart. Right now my dog...Violet has a tumor in her eye. We aren't sure what to do about it as she has been having seizures too. In the end they just break your heart. I called Newman my real life boy cause he didn't seem like a dog...he seemed like a little boy. He understood everything I said to him...it seemed. Today....three years later...I cry as I write this...but the pain does begin to lessen. The thing that helped me most was knowing...I'd rescue a little dog that needed a home. I had Newman from the age of 7 weeks but there are so many out there needing homes and one of my others was a rescue...so about 6 months later I looked on Petfinders and found a little 10 month old dachshund who needed a home. Within three days I was bringing him home with me. Is it the same? No. They are all so different. But I do know that only then is when I started to heal. To care for another. To provide a wonderful home for another that might not have had it otherwise, helped. And the knowledge that my little Newman now runs in heaven with my father...is a thought that gets me through. I've loved dogs very very much my whole life. I've experienced their deaths...my dog growing up died at 12 from a heart condition. My first adult dog died of a stroke at 16. But Newman dying at 8 when he appeared to be the picture of health...was such a shock and blow. I truly almost lost my mind. I thought I was going to die myself. My heart would race when I lay down to sleep with out him. I could not catch my breath and I didn't care to do anything I liked to do. I will be honest with you...I went to the doctor and got on anti depressants cause after the death of my father I'd been lost for a very long time...until I took anti depressants...very very mild only 10 mlg does the trick. And after Newman's death within a week...I was at the doctor and asking for help. I knew I could not let my life slip away. I didn't have two years to mourn. It was still hard...very hard even with the medication. But getting Franklin is what really helped. I think you should think hard about going now....to a shelter and picking out a dog that needs you. Helping one...making something good come out of this bad. It will heal you to help another. It really will and would honor Pearl that you loved her so much you are willing to spread your love to someone that needs you.

Oh Nita, today is day 24 and the tears are still coming every single day. Sometimes its a whimper and sometimes its a hard, pillow soaking, body shaking session. I too went to the doctor for Xanax so I could just be knocked out and when they asked why I said, "Because I lost my best friend". I couldn't bring myself to tell them my dog died because if they were not pet lovers, I didn't want to explain anything. I am now searching for another pet as I cannot continue in this pain. I have never felt such an internal void and I too thought I might die from a broken heart. I started to feel how this was messing me up internally and I feared for my health. I didn't think I would get another pet but instead 'enjoy my freedom' for awhile but Pearls death has been such a lesson in what she did for my soul and my spirit. I didn't know how much she had softened me until she was gone. I don't want to be that hard, cold, emotionless woman again. I am on a hunt for a Havanese as I can't bear to get another Bichon that looks like her. I was searching rescues as well but when I saw a video of Havanese puppies my heart sank and I remembered I had raised Pearl from 8 weeks old and having that little, innocent baby fluff again was what I needed. I may not be good with kids, but I was one terrific mom. I need it again. I am sure I will post it here if I find another child. Thanks for writing and I am so sorry the pain of this kind of loss is a life lesson for anyone.
