Faking your way to business success?

This past week I came across some painfully obvious fake reviews and testimonials on a number of websites. I was sharing my experience privately with +David Amerland who thought it would be a great idea to schedule a discussion about the issues surrounding testimonials and reviews as well the temptation and risk in faking them.

So, next week, David and I are going to embark on a mission to engage in a discussion around the importance of reviews and testimonials and why the temptation to fake them is so powerful.

The theme of our discussion, when you peel back the layers, is really about trust. And since David just wrote a cool book about trust, this topic seems to fit right in line with not only what he is trending with, but what is really, truly, seriously a major concern for you.

The truth is, trust is easy to fake, but dont let that ease lull you into a sense of comfort. It is just as easy to be found out.

And THAT, my friends, is what will guide my discussion with David. ;)

Knowing how a search engine works is cool. Knowing how actual humans use search engines is where the business value is.

Way too many people get wrapped up way too tight around the notion of ranking in search. Many seem to forget that the end goal is to use search to grow your business. As such, and because people buy what you sell, you need to know how to use SEO to engage people. To do that, you need to start with a solid understanding of how people actually use search engines.

Because. It. Matters!

Hope to see you there!

I know one thing, social media marketing is more about being social than it is about being marketing.

It is a great channel for most businesses who use the channel wisely. It is critical to understand how your audience uses social networks because it is critical to understand how you will engage them there.

We are going to discuss a lot of things as it pertains to social media marketing, specifically, and hopefully, clarifying a number of the misconceptions about social media and business.

Hope to see you there!

What's up with all the talk about content marketing?

To continue our series, in session 5 ( https://goo.gl/3ucBqf ) Ammon and I will talk about the fundamentals of online content marketing.

Really, these days its kind of silly to even call it content marketing, because in reality, it is all just marketing. The major difference, or shift if you will, is that consumers require information in the form of educational content, as a way to check you out, and see if you have the goods. ;)

Among the many directions we can take this conversation, of primary purpose will be to discuss how to create content to meet people at different stages of their buying process, and how to match your content to their goals and objectives.

Hope to see you there!

How you design your website depends largely on what you expect the website to do for your business.

Series Recap
In session 1 +Ammon Johns and I discussed the basics of what marketing actually is, and how you can use a well designed strategy to create the best tactical marketing plan for your business.

In session 2 we talked quite a bit about the importance of knowing who you are selling to, and how they buy what you sell.

Session 3 was an overview of what it means to have an online presence, as well as the fundamental components that make online marketing successful.

To continue our series, in session 4, Ammon and I will talk about your business website.

Topics
- Why you need a website?
- What your website needs to do for you
- Designing your website for your audience
- Website content

My view is that your website, in most cases, is the center of your marketing plan, because really everyone will want to see it before they hire you.

It doesnt matter if you are found online or offline, in the end, all roads will point back to your website.

Because of this, you cannot ignore the fundamentals, nor can you blow this part of your marketing plan off by using one of those "easy to use" templates.

Ammon and I are not going to teach you how to build a website. We are going to help you understand the key components of an effective website, so that whether you or a designer builds your site, it works to produce results for your business.

Hope to see you there!

Many do online marketing wrong, because you dont know what it means to have an online presence.

In our last discussion, +Ammon Johns talked at a high level about the importance of knowing who you are selling to. This was the follow up, to the discussion on marketing and marketing strategy because really, if you dont know and understand who your market is, you dont have an effective strategy.

Now we start to get into the meat of our series on The Fundamentals of Online Marketing.

Session 3 will be a discussion centered around 4 topics:

1 - A brief history of online marketing
2 - Absolute Value - a quick summary of how people buy based on what other people say about you, not what you say about you
3 - Key Components of an Online Presence
4 - Dont forget Offline as a complement to Online

Our goal will be to help you understand the essential components of an effective online presence, and how these components work together to help you market your business online.

Hope to see you there!

Know who you are selling to, and why they want to buy from you.

In our last discussion, +Ammon Johns and I talked about the importance of understanding what marketing is, and how to go about the beginning stages of developing a marketing plan. Namely, we suggested that you develop a proper strategy.

An essential component of developing your strategy, as well as designing the right marketing plan for your specific business, is targeting the right market, and developing a solid understanding of the people who make up that market.

Who are they? What are their goals? When do they need what you sell? Why do they need what you sell? Why would they buy from you? Where do they hang out? What are their goals?

In our next discussion, I will be asking Ammon questions about how to pick the right market for your business, and why its so important to understand the people who will buy from you before you determine what your tactics will be.

Topics
- What is your demand model?
- Who is your ideal target customer?
- Buyer Persona vs Buyer Profile
- Marketing follows persona development, not the other way around.

This session will cover the most critical component to developing your overall business strategy and the plan to help you achieve your business goals.

So many mistakes are made because business owners havent done the up front work to identify who they want as customers, or why these people would buy from them.

Our goal will be to help you understand how to select your market, and how understanding the people you want as customers will lead to a more effective development of your online marketing plan.

Hope to see you next week!
