There is power in editorial juxtaposition.
From Sunday's NYT article on real estate & class in Chicago.  Rahm Emanuel's quote about a 'false dichotomy' of a gulf between the downtown Gold Coast and the South & West sides.  Ouch.

Introduction

curious about nature's order, drawn to beauty, symmetry, and pulchritude he has always stood slack jawed at the ridiculous tension bewteen one's inner life & desires and the expectations --- farcically distant across a gap-chasm -- of being respectable.  that said, he finds citizenship and states of informedness to be among our highest calling

though no expert, i enjoy reading about this history of mathematics. because few human artifacts/ideas are so resistant to times ravages, which morph the language that constitutes our consciousness (you'd struggle with Elizabethan English) in so very rapid a time frame.

I enjoy the logic games behind structuring one's data so as to make your RDBS sing. Google Apps configuration along with Salesforce.com are hobbies that i get to combine with running the alumni club I do.  this geekdom need not be reconciled with the slinky aesthetic creature well versed in humanity's humanities

have traveled widely enough to know that certainty is indeed elusive, just as ignorance (his own included) a distressingly viscious state of affairs.  it's funny to joke that simply choosing to not believe in the reality of the suffering of others is a great coping mechanism, but at the end of the day that's a rather indefensible position to take.

there is power in language, and that surely this is one of the greatest sentences ever translated into english:

The waiters, light-footed, smart, flashy fellows, not a few pleasure-boys among them, but now sweaty and harried, scarcely had time to catch their breaths, and their forever smiling head-steward with the cold look in the corner of his eyes and the politely tip-opened hand, drove them hither and thither, himself rushing up-deck and down-deck because, apart from the progress of the meal, it was necessary at the same time to take care of those who -- wonderful to relate -- seemed to be already sated and now were taking their pleasure in other ways, some promenading with hands clasped upon their bellies or over their behinds, some, on the contrary, discoursing with expansive gestures, some dozing on their cots or snoring, their faces covered with their togas, some sitting at the gaming boards, all of whom had to be served and appeased incessantly with tidbits which were passed around the decks on large silver plates and offered to them, keeping in mind a hunger which might assert itself at any moment, keeping in mind a gluttony which was limned in the expression of all of them, ineradicably and unmistakably as much in the faces of the well-nourished as in those of the haggard, in those of the slack as well as the swift, of the restless and the indolent, in the faces of the sleepers and wakers, sometimes chiselled in, sometimes kneaded in, clearly or cloudily, cruelly or kindly, wolfish, foxish, cattish, parrotish, horsish, sharkish, but always dedicatd to a horrible, somehow self-imprisoned lust, insatiably desirous of having, desirous of bargaining for gods, money, place and honors, desirious of the bustling idleness of possession.  (The Death of Virgil)

We've done two happy hours for Columbia Business School Alumni in this is quiet refined gem of a hotel bar, Quill, which is arguably my favorite in the city. Staunch club supporter Dan Anglin of Prince Henry Navigator funds presented his major gift to me there. I went there for a celebratory meal as well, and the service was outstanding: when ladies sit, out come foot stools, very plus, for the lady's handbag -- lest it get 'dirty' on the pristine floor. And when you depart, the staff presents you with a parchment printed with the wines you consumed, for future reference - and knowing that in your tipsy state you'd never remember on your own.

The Club aims to go beyond your expectations with frequent fun gatherings. Frequent is critical. Work so very often gets the better of personal priorities we had hoped to attend to. We understand this, and compensate by saying to you, in effect: don't worry, there will be another chance to engage in just two or three weeks. Happy Hours are an integral part of any club manager's toolkit - and we'd be lying to deny that we don't rely upon them: they're easy to pull off. However, we take extra care to transcend the limitations the phrase "Happy Hour" connotes -- young alumni on the make (in whatever sense), shameless networking. That's all a bit, well... you know, and it has a tendency to make older alumni think that they don't belong, which is unacceptable. So the club has developed a formula to make our Happy Hours somewhat different. The venues are selected deliberately to: price out the hordes of DC interns and fresh college graduate scene-sters. So we set for you a posh stage -- either stately like the St. Regis or the Hay Adams, or luxe moderne like the Sofitel or Park Hyatt -- and organize a gathering less like a frat party and more like a salon of the type curated by Mme. de Stael, spacious and gracious, facilitating conversation, a dying art form we consider it our duty to prop up. And voila: suddenly alumni ranging from ages 25 to 55 find themselves at home. And the club leader contented. Bar Manager Duc always treats the Columbia Alums in spelndid style.

When I lived in Milano, this lovely, intimate restuarant was about 3/4 of a mile from my apartment. When I had visitors from out of town, I'd take them there for lovingly prepared food sourced from the city's outskirts. Maitress d' the sister; chef, the brother. The part that blew me away was when I went back some 5 or 6 years later, and the sister hostess was eyeing me, and said, 'you used to live here, you're from new york' --- floored me. I

Their lovely bar, Off the Record, is richly evocative of a Washington of Yesteryear. And its proximity to the power that shall remain unnamed is, if one falls for such things, virtually intoxicating. Feb 2009 Happy Hour held there.
