We first visited Mara's when they were still located in the East Village and we were thrilled to have them open an outpost on Long Island. The food is outstanding - fun, different, tasty - starting with the appetizers (oh, that crawfish bread). We never seem to have room for dessert. We bring friends, family and work colleagues and everyone has loved the place. We give it the highest rating possible.

This is for Mara's Too in Wantagh. Unfortunately, there isn't an a G+ account for there (yet?) . We ate there last night for the first time and absolutely loved the experience. The wings were top notch as were the fried pickles. My kids had the pulled pork and the brisket. Both were very happy. I had a burger and it was one of the best I've had in years. Around $10 with fries puts it in the 5 Guy/Shake Shack price range BUT the burger I had last night easily blows them away. The tequila selection is great, enough to get me in the door all by itself. Add to that an attentive owner and friendly staff and you've got a hit here. We will be regulars...I think if someone were to design a restaurant just or me? This might be it.

The only two positives, if you want live fresh Louisiana Oysters or have a hankering for Bananas Foster this is the place. Other than that, I was very disappointed. I lived in Louisiana for 5 years and was really excited about eating at this place. I've eaten at the other Long Island spots (too bad Paula Jean's closed) and was hoping this was going to be the place. New York Cajun eateries, Cajun food is warm not so hot you can't eat it. So for example Mara's, use spice boil when making your boiled shellfish, not liquid boil and some Tony's over the top of it. This caused the crawfish to have almost no taste and the mushrooms to be so hot they just weren't enjoyable. The gumbo was bland, the only saving grace was hot sauce and if that's the case, skip it. The same should be said for the etouffee. If you're a foodie and know real Louisiana food, just skip this place. You will be very, very disappointed. Unless of course, you want fresh gulf oysters and bananas foster.

As a big fan of Cajun style food, I was excited to find a place so close to home. So, along with my wife, I met a client at Mara’s. With a reservation for 6:00, we were hoping to enjoy a couple hours of good food and good company. For starters, we ordered three various appetizers, which 2 of the 3 were really good. The Artichoke dip was not up to par which was returned. However, no apology, but just a response that someone in the kitchen will taste it. A few drinks later our dinner was served. All three of us enjoyed our dinner. The chicken, baby back ribs, catfish and crawfish were very tasty. As we bypassed dessert for our final round of drinks and the $250 bill was paid, we were approached by Mara, the manger asking us to move to the bar, which had only two seats open. She needed our table for other diners. This wouldn’t be a shock if we had been sitting for three hours, but we were 15 minutes shy of two hours. First, I was embarrassed as I was sitting with a client, but mostly stunned by this request. My embarrassment turned to frustration, as there was no line at the door and no apology by the management. This experience was one of disappointment and left a “bad” taste in our mouth. When I got home and looked for reviews about Mara’s, it appears my experience was not uncommon. I have to say, a return to Mara’s is unlikely.

Don't know why there are any bad reviews, food is excellent. I've been to the Big Easy and this is about as close you're gonna get to the bayou, seriously. Freshly flown in crawdads and awesome bbq. I love great food and Mara's Homemade delivers.
