As always, thank you for your generous donations this month. I am delighted to say that we have covered the Ubuntu MATE costs, yet again, this month and even had enough surplus to support three other Open Source projects!

Lenovo are dreadful, but let's not ignore our own failings
So blah blah Superfish blah blah trivial MITM everything's broken. Lenovo deserve criticism. The level of incompetence involved here is so staggering that it wouldn't be a gross injustice for the company to go under as a result[1]. But let's not pretend that this is some sort of isolated ...

So, this happened.

Thanks to +Martin Pitt for his help.

Some discussion of what Intel Boot Guard actually means for users
PC World wrote an article on how the use of Intel Boot Guard by PC manufacturers is making it impossible for end-users to install replacement firmware such as Coreboot on their hardware. It's easy to interpret this as Intel acting to restrict competition in the firmware market, but the reality ...

Nice

Interesting, like git-flow but easier.
gitreflow - Reflow automatically creates pull requests, ensures the code review is approved, and squash merges finished branches to master with a great commit message template.

+Dan Gillmor is using open source to fight against controlling corporations.

He uses Linux on his laptop and +CyanogenMod, an open source +Android, on his phone.

It works, but it takes some fiddling, and it's not for most people. And he still uses Microsoft and Google products sometimes.

I respect his choice, but I am still, as he puts it, choosing "convenience over control."

An excellent post by David Faure explaining how to do network transparent file operations in a Qt application.
Last week I visited a new customer who is making medical and industrial devices which have one thing in common: image and video capturing, and letting the user save these files onto a USB key. These devices run embedded Linux … Continue reading →

The MATE Desktop for Google Summer of Code 2015 planning is already underway. We have 4 project ideas this year and are delighted to have +openSUSE as our GSoC organiser again.

The application process isn't open for a while yet but I thought I'd start putting the word out early because we've got some cool projects on offer.

MATE Desktop media casting

Brief explanation: Create a Caja plugin that can be used to cast audio and video content via DLNA/uPNP, Chromecast and Miracast protocols.

MATE Desktop mobile device integration

Brief explanation: Create a panel applet that can interact with notifications from mobile devices.

MATE Window Manager (Marco) GPU accelerated compositing

Brief explanation: Add GPU accelerated compositing to Marco, the MATE window manager to supplement (but not replace) the existing software compositor.

MATE Panel Renovation

Brief explanation: The MATE Panel is the principle component for user interaction with the MATE Desktop and it requires several usability enhancements, improvements and fixes.

Find out more on the link below 😃
If you have questions or suggestions, you could contact MATE developers through IRC or our mailing list. IRC : Join #mate-dev channel on irc.freenode.net. Mailing list: MATE development mailing list web interface is located at http://ml.mate-desktop.org/listinfo/mate-dev.
