Ginkgo Recovery

On Mother's Day weekend in May, I transplanted this ginkgo tree from a shady spot where it had been merely surviving for the last 6 years--planted on another mother's day to honor my mom and her favorite tree. I watched an appropriate amount of you-tube videos, spent two days creating a burlap-ed root ball, moved an irrigation line, and prepared the spot where our 35 year old dogwood had finally succumbed after a full life.  Unfortunately, the root ball disintegrated in moving it only 15 feet--my wife and I just couldn't maneuver it out of the ramped hole I dug. We were were left with a 18 inch wad of dirt and 18 inches of major roots sticking out of it.  But, I had hope and watered it so that it held its leaves for a month (upper right) until we hit hot weather --and maybe a bit of over watering (lower right) and it dropped almost every leaf.  However, as Stephen Hawking has said "While there's life..." and now hundreds of new buds are springing forth. I guest there is a reason why we call the 280 million year old ginkgo a living fossil.
