Three Boeing 737 fuselages headed for final assembly end up in river when train derails in Montana.   Perfect example of the high cost of US infrastructure neglect...  consider the impact on Boeing's delivery schedule...

these trains pass through the parking lot of the company i worked at prior to Google in Kirkland, Washington (on the way to Boeing's Renton plant).   I remember during the interview being dumbfounded by seeing a plane on a train. (actually 2 of them, they normally ship them in pairs.  Those rail cars are specially made for the purpose.

SF's infamous sea lions suddenly disappear! Are they vacationing down south on Catalina Island? Or is it a sign the Big Quake is about hit, causing California to sink Atlantis-like into the Pacific?  ;-)
http://bit.ly/1mrtBd6
Last week, just as in December 2009, the sea lions were out lazing in the sun and posing for photos one day - and then, without notice, they disappeared. On one hand, it's not unusual for the sea lions around Fisherman's Wharf to leave their docks, particularly at this time of year, said marine scientists. Stewart Brand in December 1969. Add in all he accomplished over the intervening 40 years and he is the model of what every innovator should aspire to!

The ones who have rejected our culture, for what seem to them good reasons, did the Grant Avenue scene and the Haight scene, until the rents rose and the mass media made proper freaks of them. A great many of them regard the Whole Earth Catalog, the creation of a bright young cat named Stewart Brand, as an essential tool in this effort. ... a realm of intimate personal power is developing - power of the individual to conduct his own education, ...

The WEC was a formative influence on me as a teen and young adult.

It was the Web of it's time, rendered on newsprint. Computing, video, aikido, Swiss army knives, the Engineers Illustrated Thesaurus, the Compleat Idiot's Guide to VW, Fritz The Cat, yoga, geodomes, Edmund Scientific, solar power, ham radio...all presented with explanations and pointers to access...

Yes, Access to tools was what it was all about, even for those of us without the means or motivation (or, in some cases, socio-political skills) to start our own communes. Tools were tools, what you did with them was your own affair...

That's before we even got to II Cybernetic Frontiers and How Buildings Learn...
