Can you believe it’s almost Spring? Another month and our gardens will start bursting with color and trees will be turning green again, we start spending more time outdoors and the days will be longer.

The coming of spring also means for some of us that it’s time to Spring Clean. Besides all the obvious places to spring clean – closets, bedrooms, living areas, etc.

Read more on Spring Cleaning here: https://goo.gl/yvA9qw

– unfortunately there are some places that get forgotten about.

1. Cleaning under and behind things can often get overlooked where dirt and dust accumulates on the floor and walls. Cleaning under the stove, refrigerator, beds, sofas and chairs (and don’t forget to get under the cushions), and the washer and dryer are just some of the areas we forget about.

2. Not only do we forget about cleaning under things but also cleaning the top of things. Spring cleaning is a good time to clean the tops of picture frames, the refrigerator, bookshelves, hanging shelves, tops of windows, etc.

3. Most pillows can be washed but we forget about them and just wash the pillow case. No matter the temperature, our bodies sweat and that can get through the pillow case and into the pillow.

4. There are things that get touched daily and never thought to clean like railings, salt and pepper shakers, drawer pulls, canisters, doorknobs and light switches.

These are just some of the areas we can forget to Spring Clean.

What are some of the places you forget to clean?

Gearing Up for the Holidays

Wow! Christmas is almost here. It’s crazy how fast this year has gone. If you’re like me, you are getting ready for all the guests that will be coming over for Christmas dinner and there’s a lot to do.

Here’s a few tips to help you get started.

1. Cleaning the Bathroom – I know this is something you’ll be doing but don’t forget to clean under the sink and any other extra closets or cubbies that might be in there, you never know who will be looking. Also, keep extra toilet paper out, maybe in an old wooden box or a decorative basket depending on your design style and have enough holiday hand towels that you can change out as needed.

2. Take a walk around the outside of the house and see what can be improved like pruning dormant plants and raking dead leaves. Be especially mindful of the porch area - what decorations can be added that say Happy Holidays and Welcome to your visitors. Clean any windows that are dirty looking.

3. Inside the house look for things like too much clutter, dead plants and areas that can be made to look more festive. Vacuum, dust and clean floors with a professional eye and make sure you have plenty of room in the coat closet and enough hangers for all your guest’s outerwear.

4. Now is also a good time to go through the refrigerator and toss the old and arrange things to fit all the foods you’ll be storing like dips, sauces and left overs.

5. Do you have enough matching dinnerware, stemware and glasses? If not, there are plenty of sales going on and you might be able to pick up a new set for a good deal.

Oh, and don’t forget to keep the kitchen sparkling clean as it always seems to be the place people congregate.

Before winter approaches, make sure your home and your family are ready for the colder months ahead.

Make a list and get your home ready. Make appointments to have the furnace and fireplaces professional checked out, clean vents, check for leaks and insulate any exposed pipes.

Get the kids involved and make an emergency supply kit of food, water, games, flashlights, batteries and reading materials.

One thing some of us may forget about is the car. Make sure there is a full tank of gas in all vehicles, blankets, snacks and water. You never know when you might get stuck in a traffic jam.

Labels are confusing when it comes to food expiration dates - Sell By, Best if Used By, Use By – What? Do these dates mean we need to toss food out on this date? Does it mean stores need to take a product off the shelf on this date? Is it only indicating freshness and quality of a product?

This Introduction to Food Expiration Dates might help answer a few of these questions as well as other factors that can cause food to spoil before an expiration date.

Food won't last forever but I don't like being wasteful, most things really do last beyond the Sell By, Best if Used By, and Use By dates.

The air will soon be turning crisp and the nights will be getting colder and I’m sure those of you with a fireplace will be sparking up the logs and enjoying the warmth of the fire.

Besides regular fireplace maintenance, if you have a brick fireplace and the brick is in need of cleaning, take a look at these cleaning methods:

You’ll find by using a little Dawn dish detergent and maybe a little Borax can rid the brick surface of your fireplace of dirty soot and grime.

If you need something for a tougher cleaning job we also supply cleaning methods using ammonia and trisodium phosphate (TSP).
