My response to comments by CassiopeiaAuri on my Canon EOS 5D Mark III vs Nikon D800 video (below).

Regarding the 3 BIG Reasons to Buy the Nikon D800 OVER the Canon 5D MkIII in
Nikon D800 vs Canon 5DMk3: 3 BIG Reasons to Buy the Nikon D800 OVER the Canon 5D MkIII by ArtOfTheImage:

1. More megapixels - My take on it: Since a higher resolution with the same sensor size necessarily means a smaller pixel size, it's really a trade off between higher resolution and A) how much light each pixel gets and B) how fast an image can be saved to the storage cards. It's for the latter reason I got the 64GB Lexar 1000x card (http://gdgt.com/profile/rsimpson/) just for its speed. And although I probably won't ever need a 73-frame 2½ fps burst (http://www.RobGalbraith.com/bins/camera_wb_multi_page.asp?cid=6007-12452) that's 2½ times the 1 fps burst capability of the Nikon with the same 1000x speed card (http://www.RobGalbraith.com/bins/camera_wb_multi_page.asp?cid=6007-12451).

And regarding the dynamic range of the camera, there is a good amount of detail in the shadows on the gable in this picture: https://plus.google.com/+RobertSimpson/posts/VfMxrhK7CZr.

2. High ISO - My take on it: He's plain wrong about the sensor - the Canon EOS 5D Mark III is not using the old 5D Mark II sensor, it's actually the same sensor technology as the 1D X. My own unscientific 25,600 high ISO test (http://google.com/+RobertSimpson/posts/E8Hr6RGRACL) seems to have only about as much noise as other images I've seen at ISO 6400.

3. $500 more expensive - My take on it: With a total cost in the $7K range for the body, my first two lenses (50mm f/1.2 and 70-300mm), two storage cards (CF mentioned above and SDHC) and an extra battery, a delta of $500 doesn't make enough of a difference to affect the decision.

Regarding the follow-up video Canon 5D Mk3 vs Nikon D800 : 1 BIG Reason to Buy the Canon 5D MkIII OVER the Nikon D800 by ArtOfTheImage:
My take on it: That same logic applies both ways - your existing investment in glass would also be a big reason to buy the Nikon D800 over the Canon 5D Mark III.  But the logic only holds true if you stick with a body that has roughly the same sensor size - otherwise when you use an exiting lens on the other camera body, you wind up with a different effective focal length (more so for wide-angle and normal lenses than telephoto lenses, however). For example, the normal focal length on a camera with a 62.5% sensor size (1.6 crop factor) is 28-30mm while the normal focal length on a 100% full frame DSLR is 45-50mm (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Normal_lens).  So your 35mm "normal" lens on your APS-C body winds up being a wide angle lens on the full frame body, effectively the same as having a 22mm lens on the APS-C body.

I've only switched camera/lens systems three times, starting with a Minolta XG-7 in 1979. I tend to stick with the equipment I purchase and add to it progressively rather than upgrade components piecemeal by reselling them. When I switched from Minolta to Nikon in 2003 I purchased a bundle with three cheaper lenses and an extender, since I already knew I wanted to upgrade to a more serious DSLR after the prices had came down at bit.  So, by design, the investment in existing equipment was not holding me back in this case.

The point about being able to downsize a 36MP image from the Nikon D800 to the same size as a 22MP image from the Canon in order to reduce the noise in the higher resolution image is a good point, but applies only for still images.  I'm also interested in video - partially because as my parents get older I would like to capture some of my Dad's stories on video for the family (nothing like #PittsburghDad , of course;-) and maybe try to make a few of my own for YouTube, like the one below. (Being one of the first, it's not as professional as I would like, and if viewers start to show some interest, I'll have to get a mic ... I'm still deciding on whether to get an on-camera mic for the family videos I mentioned or a lapel mic for the YouTube videos.)

If I was making a recommendation to someone who intended on taking still images exclusively, I might give the Nikon the edge based on the ArtOfTheImage video, but to take full advantage of the capabilities of these cameras, for both still photography and video, I'd still lean toward the Canon.

There is some pretty good info from ArtOfTheImage.com and other places, but you have to decide what is best for your own needs based on how you intend to use the equipment.

Wish I could tag the photo as "Me", but I can't. At least one of the guys in that picture looks better than me. Maybe the other one too. My official site is at http://www.DavidCaruso.com/, but with me behind the camera rather than in front of it.
