Ross W. Ulbricht, the founder of Silk Road, an online drug outlet for the sale of cocaine, heroin, LSD and various other illegal drugs, was hit hard in a lifetime sentence by U.S. District Court Justice Katherine B. Forrest. In 3 years of operation utilizing the virtual currency Bitcoin, Ulbricht made millions through approximately 1.5 million drug transactions with thousands of different seller accounts and more than 100,000 purchasers.  The prosecution of Ulbricht is groundbreaking in that he is considered to be the architect of a method of using the internet to "facilitate criminal transactions."
