How to sell your hotel room
“Can I sell my hotel room” and “How do I sell my hotel room” are two questions we get asked quite often. The short answer is yes, and it is very easy!
What do you do when you have a non-refundable hotel reservation and your plans change? If you cancel your reservation you will lose your deposit and will have to pay cancelation fees. Instead, you can sell your hotel room to someone else!
Follow these steps to sell your hotel room:
1. Call your hotel to check that you can change the name of the main guest under the reservation. This is how a hotel booking is transferred from one traveler to another.
2. Check if you have to pay the hotel any fees to change the name. Most hotels will do this for free.
3. List your room on SpareFare.
4. Spread the word that you’re selling your hotel reservation via Facebook and Twitter and other social media platforms!
5. Accept a bid for your hotel reservation.
6. Call the hotel to change the name to the name of your buyer. Ask the hotel for a written confirmation of the name change and send it to SpareFare.
7. Get paid after the end of the hotel stay.

PITFALLS TO AVOID WHEN BUYING A FLIGHT FROM SOMEONE ELSE

So, someone has a flight they can no longer use and you want to buy it from them? Great – you will buy a cheaper flight, the other person will get some of their money back and there will be fewer empty seats on planes!

There are a few things you should watch out for when you buy a flight from a person. Flights are expensive and this is an ideal place for fraudsters to try to scam you. Someone might even be selling a flight that does not exist!

The main question is – can they actually sell you the flight? Airlines allow name changes – this is how a flight can be transferred from one person to another. So the first thing to check should be if the flight is with an airline which allows name changes. We have a whole page dedicated to airline name change fees and rules – if the airline is not in our list, it probably does not allow name changes. Or at least not officially.

The second problem to think about is when will you send this person the money – before they have changed the name, after they have changed the name, or after the flight? Ideally, you want to send them the money after the flight. However, they will want the money before they change the name. You do not know if you can trust them, and they do not know if they can trust you! Sending large amounts of money to someone you do not know is a huge risk!

Another problem that not many people think about is the fact that the seller will still have access to the booking after they have changed the flight in your name. The flight was probably purchased through their online airline account and they have access to the account and to the flight. There is nothing stopping them from changing the name of the flight again and selling it to someone else. All they have to do is pay the name change fee again. And unless you are checking the booking regularly, you won’t know until you turn up at the airport!

With SpareFare all buyers are protected – we hold the money with us until the flight takes off. This stops the seller from changing the name again and selling your flight to someone else!

I can’t make my non-refundable flight, what should I do?

You can transfer your flight to someone else if your airline allows you to change the passenger name. Please note some airlines allow only correction of spelling errors in the name, this is not the same as changing the name to a different person! There is always a fee for the name change and it varies. Most low-cost airlines offer name changes as part of their official policy and you can do it easily from your airline account. You can check if your airline allows name changes and its fee structure. Some regular airlines, which do not allow name changes as an official policy, make exceptions for their customers - we have seen quite a few occasions where airlines have deviated from their general terms to make a client happy and pocket in money from the fees. So it is always worth calling your airline’s customer service and trying to persuade them to allow you to change the name for a fee.

Do I have an option if my airline does not allow name changes?

If you are a resident of the EU and you have booked your flights and hotel together, you may be allowed to transfer your holiday package under the European Directive of Package Travel, Package Holidays and Package Tours 1990. The directive forces travel agents to allow travellers to change the names of the passengers under the booking. You have to check with your holiday operator what the fees and deadlines are for name changes.

Things to check if you are selling a return flight

If you are selling a return flight, you will usually have to sell the two legs of the journey together. This is because the two flights are under one booking and the airlines usually allow you to change the name of the whole booking, not parts of it. If you have already used the outbound flight, it is unlikely that the airline will allow you to change the name of the inbound flight. The only exception we have encountered is Norwegian.

You can change the dates and perhaps even the route of the flight

All airlines allow you to change the dates and some even the entire route, e.g. change a flight from London to New York to be from Rome to Paris. Even if you can’t fly soon at all, SpareFare can help match you with a buyer who can travel but needs different dates or route. You can list your changeable flight ticket as an airline voucher. Airlines usually charge a separate fee for that, you can find an extensive list of airlines and their flight change fees and rules.

Sometimes you have to pay the fare difference

If you are changing the flight, most airlines request you the pay the fare difference if the new flight is more expensive than the originally booked one.
If you are changing only the name, you may still have to pay the fare difference depending on your airline. You can find if your airline requires this additional payment on our Airline Change Fees page.
If you know that you will be changing both the flight and the name, change them together to avoid paying extra fees.

THE MYTH THAT FLIGHT TICKETS ARE NON-TRANSFERABLE

Regular airlines like emphasizing that their economy tickets are non-transferable and non-refundable because they make their profit from selling business class seats. This leads to most people believing that all airline tickets are non-transferable, while most low-cost and even a few regular airlines officially allow such a transfer via a passenger name change. The low-cost carriers are expanding at a rapid rate, in 2015 they had 28% global and 41% European market share (up from 17% in 2005!). Judging from these numbers, the myth won’t be around for long.

Any other options?

If you are unlucky to have booked a non-transferable and non-refundable flight ticket which is not part of a holiday package, you may still be able to use your ticket! Many airlines allow you to change the dates of your flight or even the route for a fee. Your flight from London to Ibiza in June can turn into a flight from London to Paris in September. You can find an extensive list of airlines flight change fees and rules.

Sell your hotel reservation

Whether you have booked your flights and hotel together or not, you can list your room for sale. If you flight is not part of a package deal and it is non-transferable, you should try to at least sell your hotel reservations. Most hotels allow name changes, you should contact your hotel directly for their rules and procedures. Unlike airlines, most hotels do not require a fee for name changes!
