Carefree Kids has been awarded a Big Lottery Fund grant of £250,000 over five years to expand its work.
The grant will allow the charity to work with more schools and children not just in Waltham Forest but particularly to widen its work in neighbouring boroughs.
Part of the money will go into recruiting a lot more volunteers, so the charity is keen to hear from people who would be interested in helping with its work, which involves going into schools and working with troubled children. The charity also needs volunteers to help with office work, fundraising and promotion and is currently seeking some additional trustees.
Ros Kane, Founder of Carefree Kids, said: “We are delighted to receive this grant from the Big Lottery Fund. Since we started in 2004 we have mainly served schools in Waltham Forest with some schools in Redbridge and Newham too. This grant will enable us to increase our services in other neighbouring boroughs too such as Enfield, Hackney and Haringey and to meet the demand we get from existing boroughs even more promptly”.
Anne Dufton, Chair of Carefree Kids Trustees, said, “This is brilliant news for Carefree Kids and shows just how much our work is valued. The money cannot be used for existing work, where we still need to fundraise — for example we need to replace our mobile therapy playbus and we still have to raise funds for that separately — but this money will help to strengthen the charity in many areas and therefore enable us to help more children and their parents”.
Anyone who would like to volunteer for Carefree Kids should go to their website www.carefreekids.org for more information.

NEW TRUSTEES WELCOMED
Use your skills in finance, social care or fundraising to help local troubled children

We’re looking for two or three people who can bring their skills and experience in these areas as trustees of the charity.
Carefree Kids is a lively, friendly charity providing emotional support to children, teenagers and their parents and carers in Waltham Forest and neighbouring London boroughs since 2004.
We use non-directive therapeutic play, art therapy, dramatherapy and dance/movement therapy to help release troubling emotions that may be difficult to communicate verbally or in other ways.
This rewarding voluntary role involves attendance at meetings approximately every six weeks, plus contributing in your area of skills at flexible times. We do need dedication and commitment.
We welcome applicants from all sections of the community, particularly people from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups and men, who are currently under-represented.
Deadline for applications: Tuesday 7 May 2013.

The magnificent dining hall of Forest School, Snaresbrook, was packed on Saturday (9 June) for Carefree Kids first ever charity fundraising concert ‘From Heart to the Heart’ performed by world renowned cellist Alexander Baillie, accompanied on piano by John Thwaites. The event was also attended by Cllr Richard Sweden, Mayor of Waltham Forest, and was held to raise funds towards an urgently needed new mobile therapy playbus, which is central to the work that Carefree Kids does in Waltham Forest and the surrounding boroughs.
