Ok, warning, this is a public post.
I am all for holding corporations accountable, but I got this petition from change.org
, where they are demanding that Bank of American rescind the $5 debit use fee. I don't feel like gathering a bunch of people that are upset about this does a whole lot of good.
What I would propose instead is ditch your big bank. Do you have any requirements for a checking account (interest bearing checking accounts would be a different matter obviously, so please exclude those)?
Switch to a credit union. They are non-profits which means that hey have higher savings rates and lower loan rates. They are generally right in your community, and directly support said community with jobs. Their checking is generally free without any strings attached. They often have perks. Also, their debit/atm cards belong to credit union networks which means you can use any of those atms for free.
My credit union out here in SF (SF Fire) gives me my credit score (ok, "grade") every quarter - for free. They refund me any atm fees that I incur. I also have gotten good interest rates on my auto loans with them. If we could refinance our mortgage, I would probably refinance with them.
Ok, I am done with my bank rant.
